When phone works

Phone interpreters for parent-teacher calls with parents who work during school hours

A phone conference suits a talk where nothing has to be shown on a screen. Schools book one in the situations below.

Parents who work days

A parent who works during school hours can still take part in a conference by phone. The school picks a time, and the parent dials in from work or home.

Follow-up calls

After a conference, a teacher may call to follow up on what was agreed and to answer the parent's questions since then. Add the child's name and the earlier plan to the booking notes.

Setting up a conference

The school calls a parent to agree on a conference time, or to move one. The interpreter interprets the times the school suggests and the parent's answer.

What to know about parent-teacher conferences by phone with an interpreter

When phone is used

A conference by phone suits a talk that needs only voices, such as a teacher's report on how a child is doing and the parent's questions. The parent does not install anything and does not need a camera. Schools also choose phone when a parent cannot come to the building, or when no interpreter for the language works near the school, because the interpreter can dial in from any city.

Who is on the line

The teacher dials in, and so does the parent or guardian, from home or work. Some schools put the student on the line too. The teacher reports on the child, and the parent answers and asks questions. The interpreter dials in as the third voice and stays on the line until the booking ends.

The interpreter's role

On the phone nobody can see who is about to speak, so the interpreter keeps the turns clear. Each time the teacher or the parent finishes a part, the interpreter gives it in full in the other language. The interpreter stays neutral, keeps the call confidential and does not add advice or opinions.

Agreeing on the time

A phone conference works only if the parent is on the line at the booked time. Agree on the day and the time with the parent first, and give the parent the dial-in number and the access code from the confirmation. Send any report or form to the parent beforehand, because nothing can be shown while everyone is on the phone.

On-site, video or phone

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for parent-teacher conferences

Phone is the lightest way to reach a parent, but nobody sees a screen. Choose by what the conference needs to show.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for parent-teacher conferences

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Does the parent need a smartphone or an app?

No. The parent dials the number from the confirmation on any phone and uses the access code.

02Can a second teacher join the call?

Yes. Give them the dial-in number and the access code too, and the interpreter interprets for everyone on the line.

03What if the parent is not on the line at the booked time?

The booking still runs for the time you booked, because the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking. Confirm the time with the parent ahead of the call.

04Can we change to video if the conference needs it?

We can change the booking to video, as long as the interpreter is available. Tell us as early as you know.

05How is a conference call priced?

The price follows the time you book, and the total appears before you pay. Each part is said in two languages, so a conference call takes longer than the same talk in English, and a little extra time helps.

06Which languages can we book for a conference call?

70 languages. Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese and Tagalog are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.

07Are your Turkish interpreters certified?

Yes. Court-certified and medically credentialed Turkish interpreters are assigned to legal and clinical matters — Federal Court Interpreter Certification, state court rosters, CCHI / NBCMI for medical. For community, educational and corporate settings we assign professionally trained interpreters matched to the subject.
