Calls we interpret
Our phone interpreters join the three kinds of calls below.
When the examiner takes the history by phone, the interpreter dials in and interprets one question and answer at a time. The claimant's answers go to the examiner in the first person.
The examiner's office or the insurer calls the claimant to confirm the exam. The interpreter interprets, so the claimant understands the date, the address and what the office asks for.
After the exam, the examiner may need one more answer for the report. A short call with the interpreter on the line lets the examiner ask for it.
Exam calls
Phone is used for the parts of an independent medical examination that do not need the claimant in front of the doctor, such as intake, the history interview and follow-up questions, where the examiner chooses it. The physical exam is done in person. Phone is also the choice when the claimant has no video, or when no interpreter for the language works nearby, since the interpreter can dial in from anywhere.

The examiner is chosen by the insurer or the defense side, and calls in to ask the questions. The claimant answers from any phone. The claimant's attorney or another observer may listen in where the rules allow it. The interpreter dials in too and can add a third party once everyone is on the line.
Because the claimant and the examiner cannot see each other, pauses mark each turn. The examiner asks one question and stops, the interpreter interprets it into the claimant's language, and the answer goes back to the examiner in English, in the claimant's own words. The interpreter works for neither side, keeps what they hear confidential and gives no opinion about the answers.
A history call
A form or record the examiner will ask about should reach the claimant before the call, since nothing can be shown on a phone line. Add the claim number and the names of the treating doctors to the booking notes, and the interpreter has them in front of them during the call.
On-site, video or phone
Phone is simple to join, but the examiner cannot see the claimant. Choose by what the examiner needs to do.

Book an interpreter in person for the physical exam in the examiner's office.
On-Site Interpretation for Independent Medical Examinations
Video is better when the examiner wants to see the claimant, as in a psychological examination or a telemedicine exam.
Video-Remote Interpretation for Independent Medical Examinations
Phone works for the history interview, an intake call or a follow-up question that does not call for seeing the claimant.

If you also need translations
Send translated documents beforehand, so the call can refer to pages everyone already has.
Medical records from earlier treatment, translated and sent in advance so the examiner and the claimant can discuss them by page.
Statements and letters in another language, translated into English for every party on the line.
Employment contracts, translated so the claimant's job terms can be discussed from one text.

Can't find it here?
The claimant dials the number from the confirmation and enters the access code, from any phone, with no app or link.
No. A phone call has no screen, so send them through the booking notes, or ask us to change the booking to video, subject to the interpreter's availability.
Yes. Each call is its own booking with its own date and start time, so book them one by one.
We do not record calls unless you ask, and an NDA applies to every session. Any recording of the history is up to the examiner.
By the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. Unused time is not refunded, so book the time the examiner expects for the history, with a little extra.
