Kinds of cases

Video interpreters for immigration consultations on family petitions, asylum, adjustment and removal defense

Immigration attorneys and their clients meet by video about four kinds of cases. Put the kind of case in the booking notes, so the interpreter can prepare the terms.

Family petitions

The attorney and the client go over a petition for a spouse, a parent or a child, the forms to fill in and the documents to collect. Each question the attorney asks for a form is interpreted for the client, and each answer goes back in English.

Asylum cases

An asylum consultation starts with the client's account of what happened and why they left. The interpreter interprets the account in full, dates and places included, because the attorney writes it down.

Adjustment of status

Clients who apply for a green card from inside the United States review Form I-485 and its documents with the attorney. The attorney reads each question on the form, and the client's answers are interpreted back into English.

Removal defense

Clients facing removal proceedings meet their attorney to understand the options and the next steps. The interpreter interprets the attorney's explanation without adding anything to it.

Video consultations

What to know about video immigration consultations with an interpreter

When video is used

A consultation is held by video when the attorney and the client are in different places. The attorney sends a meeting link, and everyone joins from their own location. Video is also chosen when no interpreter for the client's language works nearby. USCIS interviews are held in person at a field office, and we interpret those on-site only.

Who takes part

The attorney asks about the client's history, explains the options and prepares the forms. The client answers and asks questions in their own language. A paralegal may join to take notes and collect documents. The interpreter joins the same call as a guest and interprets in both directions for the whole consultation.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to give the client the same clear conversation an English speaker would have with the attorney. Advice, questions and answers are interpreted in full and in both directions, with no summaries. The interpreter is neutral, keeps the consultation confidential, and does not give legal advice or speak for the attorney.

Writing a declaration

The attorney may prepare a written declaration with the client during the call. The client tells their story in their own language, the attorney writes it in English, and the attorney then reads the draft back so the interpreter can interpret it for the client to review. The read-back takes its own time, so book hours for it.

On-site, video or phone

Choosing between video, on-site and phone for an immigration consultation

Video suits most consultations, because the attorney and the client can join from where they are.

FAQ

Questions about video interpreters for immigration consultations

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Can the interpreter join our office's Zoom or Teams meeting?

Yes. Add your link in the dashboard, and the interpreter joins it as a guest. Without a link, we create one in the Texliff room, which opens in the browser with nothing to install.

02What if the client has no computer or camera?

Book a phone session for that consultation instead. Everyone dials in from any phone with the number in your confirmation.

03Can the client keep the same interpreter for every consultation?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

04How is a video consultation priced?

By the hour, for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. A call that goes through several forms takes more hours than a single question, and unused time is not refunded.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can you interpret at immigration consultations by video?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Russian, Haitian Creole and Portuguese are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.

07Are your Portuguese interpreters certified?

Yes. Court-certified and medically credentialed Portuguese interpreters are assigned to legal and clinical matters — Federal Court Interpreter Certification, state court rosters, CCHI / NBCMI for medical. For community, educational and corporate settings we assign professionally trained interpreters matched to the subject.

08Do you cover all Portuguese dialects?

Brazilian, European and PALOP Portuguese differ in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and legal terminology. We confirm the target variety at intake and match the translator or interpreter accordingly.
