What to know about remote assignments with an interpreter
When agencies book video
Agencies book a video interpreter when the witness, counsel and the reporter join from different places. It is also the choice when no interpreter for the language works near the witness, because interpreters join from anywhere in the US. The agency adds the proceeding's link to the booking, and the interpreter joins it as a guest, on the platform the proceeding already uses.
Who takes part
Your reporter keeps the record and swears in both the interpreter and the witness. The attorneys ask questions and make objections, and the witness answers through the interpreter, who joins the same call as a guest. In an arbitration the arbitrator runs the session, and in a workers' compensation hearing it is the judge.

The interpreter's role
The interpreter's job is to make the questions and answers as clear as they would be in one language, so your reporter takes down the witness's full testimony in English. Every question and every answer is interpreted in full. The interpreter is neutral and keeps what they hear confidential. They never explain a question or add to an answer.

Link and notes
Add the proceeding's link to the booking as soon as you have it, and put the case name, the witness's name and any exhibit list in the notes. A proceeding that runs several days is booked one day at a time, and you can ask for the same interpreter on each day.
On-site, video or phone
Choosing between video and on-site for the proceedings you report
Video fits proceedings where the people are in different places. The other two settings work better in the cases below.
On-site
Book an interpreter in person when the witness sits in your deposition room or has trouble hearing on a call.
Video suits an assignment with the participants in different cities, when the platform is set up and the link is ready.
Phone (OPI)
Not offered for this session
Phone is not used for depositions. Book on-site or video for the assignments your reporters cover.

Questions from court reporting agencies about video interpreters
The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.
Can't find it here?
01Can the interpreter join the link our reporter set up?
Yes. Add the link to the booking, and the interpreter joins as a guest at the booked time. Without a link, we create a Texliff room and add it to your project.
02Do you record the session?
No, unless you ask. Your reporter's record of the testimony is separate, and every session is covered by an NDA.
03Can one interpreter work with two witnesses who speak different languages?
No. One booking is for English and one other language, so book one session for each language. Both bookings can use the same link.
04What should we tell you for a workers' compensation hearing?
The state and the board, because some boards keep their own list of approved interpreters. Add the claim or case name to the notes.
05How is a remote assignment priced?
The rate is by the hour, and the total for the booked hours shows before you pay. An interpreted proceeding runs longer than one in English, so book the extra time, because unused time is not refunded.
06Which languages can we book for our reporters?
70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Tagalog are among the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.
07Are your Indonesian interpreters certified?
Yes. Court-certified and medically credentialed Indonesian interpreters are assigned to legal and clinical matters — Federal Court Interpreter Certification, state court rosters, CCHI / NBCMI for medical. For community, educational and corporate settings we assign professionally trained interpreters matched to the subject.
