Interpreters at a law firm

What to know about working with video interpreters at a law firm

When a firm needs an interpreter

A law firm needs an interpreter whenever a client or a witness cannot follow legal advice or testimony in English. The need covers meetings with your own clients, depositions of witnesses who speak another language, and mediations where a party has to understand every offer. By video, the interpreter does not have to be near your office, which makes less common languages easier to cover.

Who takes part

In a client meeting, the attorney speaks to the client and the interpreter interprets in both directions. In a deposition, a court reporter also takes part, swears in the witness and the interpreter, and writes down the testimony. In a mediation, the interpreter stays with your client in the joint session and in the private sessions with the mediator.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make the communication between attorney and client as clear as it would be in one language, so advice is understood the way it was given. Everything is interpreted in full, without summaries. The interpreter keeps what they hear confidential and does not give advice or opinions.

Case details in the booking

Add the case caption, the names of the people involved and the legal terms that will come up to the booking notes. The interpreter reads them before the session, and every booking for the case stays together in your dashboard.

On-site, video or phone

Choosing between video, on-site and phone for legal work

Most law firm sessions can run by video. Another setting is the better choice in the cases below.

  • On-site

Book an interpreter in person for trials, in-person hearings and depositions where the witness sits with the court reporter.

    On-Site Interpretation for Law Firms
  • Video (VRI)

Video fits depositions, client meetings and mediations where people join from different places and documents are shared on screen.

  • Phone (OPI)

Phone works for short client calls and quick case updates where nobody needs to see a document.

FAQ

Questions from law firms about video interpreters

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Which video platforms can the interpreter join?

Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and the Texliff room. For depositions, the interpreter joins the link the court reporter sends.

02What if our client has no video on their side?

Book a phone interpreter for that meeting instead. Everyone dials in to the number in your confirmation.

03Do you interpret USCIS interviews for our clients?

Yes, in person. We provide interpreters for USCIS interviews on-site only, so book an on-site interpreter for them.

04Can you cover a deposition in another state?

Yes. Video interpreters work from all 50 states, and on-site interpreters are matched to the city where the deposition is taken.

05How is a video session priced?

By the hour, for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Book extra time for depositions, where every question and answer is said twice.

06Which languages do you cover for law firms?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian and Arabic are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

07Are your Farsi interpreters certified?

Yes. Court-certified and medically credentialed Farsi interpreters are assigned to legal and clinical matters — Federal Court Interpreter Certification, state court rosters, CCHI / NBCMI for medical. For community, educational and corporate settings we assign professionally trained interpreters matched to the subject.

08Do you cover all Farsi dialects?

Farsi, Dari and Tajik are mutually intelligible but diverge meaningfully. We book Iranian Farsi by default; request Dari for Afghan clients and Tajik for Central-Asian clients.
