Interviews and visits

What to know about on-site interpreters for immigration attorneys

When in-person is used

Attorneys book an interpreter in person for interviews at a USCIS office, because we provide interpreters for USCIS interviews on-site only. Consultations and interview preparation at the attorney's office are held in person as well. The interpreter reports to the address you booked and works from there. If few interpreters for the language work nearby, the trip may be longer, and it is quoted as a separate line when you book.

Who takes part

At a USCIS interview, the officer asks the questions and the applicant answers them. The petitioning spouse joins when the case is marriage-based, and the attorney attends when the applicant is represented. The interpreter sits with the applicant. At a consultation, the attorney, the client and the interpreter sit at one table.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make each session as clear as it would be if everyone spoke English. Questions and answers, and the attorney's advice in a consultation, are interpreted in full, in both directions and in the first person. The interpreter is neutral, keeps what they hear confidential, and gives no advice or opinions of their own. At a field office interview, the interpreter is also sworn in, signs Form G-1256 and shows identification.

At a USCIS interview

Before the interview

Your client brings original documents to a USCIS interview, and certified translations of any foreign documents go into the file beforehand. Order those translations early, since they are a separate order from the interpreter. Put the form type, the client's name and the terms from the case in the booking notes, and the interpreter reads them before the day.

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for immigration cases

USCIS interviews are on-site only. For the rest of the work with immigrant clients, the setting depends on where your client is and what you need to go through together.

FAQ

Questions from immigration attorneys about on-site interpreters

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What if the interview date changes?

Cancellation is in writing. You get a full refund more than seven days before the session, 75% between seven days and 48 hours before, and no refund once the session is less than 48 hours away.

02Can we ask for the same interpreter for a client's visits and interview?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

03How many hours should we book for an interview?

The price is by the hour for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Plan for arrival, check-in and the interview itself, since the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded.

04How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

05Which languages do you interpret for immigration clients?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Russian and Vietnamese are the easiest to schedule. Burmese, Pashto and other rare languages need more notice, so book as soon as the date is set.

06Èske entèprèt Italyen Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt italyen ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
