On-site interpreters for social services appointments at county offices, community agencies and homes

Social services appointments are held where the agency works or where the family lives. For each place, tell us in the booking notes how the interpreter checks in.

County and state offices

Eligibility interviews and recertifications are often held at an agency office. Put the office address, the floor and the check-in desk in the notes, so the interpreter finds the right place.

Community agencies

A community agency may hold a case planning meeting in its own meeting room. Add the address, the room and the names of the people who will be at the table.

Home visits

A caseworker may meet a household at home. The interpreter reports to that address, and the notes should say where to park and who will be home.

In-person appointments

What to know about in-person social services appointments with an interpreter

When the interpreter comes in person

Social services appointments are held in person at an agency office, on a community agency's premises or at the applicant's home. On-site is booked for the appointments the agency holds in person, and the interpreter sits with the applicant and the caseworker. We look for interpreters closest to the address first, and travel inside the interpreter's metro area is included in the hourly rate. A longer trip appears as a separate line in your quote.

Who takes part

Around the table are the caseworker or eligibility worker, who asks the questions and looks at the documents the applicant brings, and the applicant, who answers each question. A family member may sit in, especially at a home visit. The interpreter sits beside the applicant and interprets for both sides.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter lets the caseworker and the applicant talk as they would if they shared a language. Everything said is interpreted in both directions, including the applicant's questions about the forms. The interpreter does not take the agency's side or the applicant's, and the appointment stays confidential. The interpreter does not coach the applicant on answers or explain why the agency decides as it does.

Documents the agency asks for

Eligibility appointments turn on proof of income, residence and identity. Documents in another language can be translated into English from the same account before the appointment, so the caseworker reads them on the spot. Put the list of documents in the booking notes for the interpreter.

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for social services appointments

An interpreter in person suits appointments held at an office or in a home. Video and phone work when the caseworker is not at the same address.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for social services appointments

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What should we put in the booking notes?

The program or type of case, the names of the people who will attend, the forms the caseworker will use and the check-in details. The interpreter reads the notes before the day.

02What if the appointment is moved or canceled?

Cancellation is in writing. You get a full refund more than seven days before, 75% between seven days and 48 hours before, and no refund in the last 48 hours.

03Do you send interpreters to small towns and rural counties?

Yes, we cover all 50 states. Coverage is densest in large metro areas, and outside them we still send an interpreter, with more notice.

04How is an on-site appointment priced?

You pay by the hour for the hours you book, with the total shown before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking, so unused time is not refunded.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can we book an interpreter in?

70 languages. Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Korean are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice, and outside large metro areas the notice is longer.

07Èske entèprèt Tik Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt tik ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
