Interviews by form

On-site interpreters for USCIS interviews for adjustment, marriage, removal of conditions and asylum cases

USCIS holds interviews for several kinds of applications, and the form number on your notice tells you which one you have. We interpret all four kinds.

Adjustment of status

Form I-485 interviews are held at a USCIS field office, where the officer goes through the application and the original documents with the applicant. Each question and each answer is interpreted in full.

Marriage-based petitions

When Form I-130 is filed together with Form I-485, the officer asks about the marriage, and the petitioning spouse is interviewed as well. If the spouse speaks a different language from the applicant, that language needs its own booking.

Removal of conditions

Conditional residents file Form I-751 to remove the conditions on their green card, and USCIS may call the couple in for an interview. The officer asks about the marriage and the documents in the file.

Entèvyou azil

Form I-589 interviews are held at a USCIS asylum office, where the applicant gives their account to an asylum officer. The account is told in detail, so book enough hours for all of it.

Entèvyou USCIS

What to know about Entèvyou USCIS with an interpreter

When an interpreter comes

USCIS interviews are held in person, at a field office or an asylum office, and the notice names the address and the time. An interpreter we send comes to that address and works in the room with the applicant and the officer. We interpret these interviews on-site only, so there is no video or phone booking for them. For a language with few interpreters nearby, the interpreter may travel from another city, and the trip is quoted as a separate line when you book.

Who takes part

The USCIS officer asks the questions and reviews the documents. The applicant answers, and in a marriage-based case the petitioning spouse is interviewed as well. An attorney attends if the applicant is represented. At a field office, the interpreter is sworn in before the interview begins, signs Form G-1256, which is the declaration for an interpreted USCIS interview, and shows identification.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make the interview as clear as it would be if the officer and the applicant spoke the same language. Each question goes to the applicant in their language, and each answer goes to the officer in English, in full and in the first person. The interpreter is neutral, keeps what they hear confidential, and does not advise the applicant, explain a question or add to an answer.

Before the interview

The officer reviews original documents, so the applicant brings the originals. Certified English translations of foreign documents go in the file beforehand, and they are ordered separately from the interpreter. Add the form number and the names of everyone attending to the booking notes, so the interpreter can prepare.

FAQ

Questions about interpreters for USCIS interviews

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Do you send interpreters to asylum offices as well as field offices?

Yes. Enter the address of the office on your notice, and tell us the form number in the booking notes.

02Can we ask for the same interpreter if USCIS calls the applicant back?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

03How is a USCIS interview priced?

The price is for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded, so book enough hours for a long interview.

04What happens if USCIS reschedules the interview?

Cancel in writing. You get a full refund more than seven days before the booking, 75% from seven days down to 48 hours before, and no refund after that.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages do you interpret for USCIS interviews?

70 languages. Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Russian and Portuguese are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice, and so does an office far from a large city.

07Èske entèprèt Ebre Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt ebre ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
