When phone works

Phone interpreters for IEP calls with parents who cannot come in, follow-ups and amendments

A full IEP meeting is usually better in person or on video. Schools book a phone interpreter instead in the situations below.

Parent who cannot come in

A parent who cannot leave work, or lives too far from the school, can still take part. Everyone dials in at the booked time, and the interpreter interprets for the parent.

Follow-up calls

A teacher may call the parent after the meeting to say how the new goals are going, or to answer questions that came up at home. Book these calls separately, and ask for the same interpreter each time.

Short amendment calls

When the team changes one goal or service during the year, the school may decide a call is enough. Put the page with the change in the notes, so the interpreter has it in front of them.

IEP calls

What to know about IEP calls with a phone interpreter

When phone is used

The team and the parent look at reports and plans together, so a full IEP meeting is usually held in a room or on video. Phone is chosen when the parent has no video connection, when the talk is about one point, or when no interpreter for the language lives near the school. The interpreter dials in from wherever they are, so the school does not need one nearby.

Who is on the line

The parent or guardian dials in from home, work or any phone. The special education teacher calls from the school, and a district representative or the evaluator joins when the call is about the plan or a report. The interpreter dials in to the same line, and can add a third party to the call once everyone is on the line.

The interpreter's role

A phone call has no faces to read, so the interpreter takes the turns one at a time. A staff member speaks for a few sentences and stops, and the interpreter then says them in the parent's language, in full, and interprets the parent's answer back the same way. The interpreter stays neutral, keeps the call private, has no opinion on the school's plan, and gives the parent no advice.

Papers for the call

Nothing can be shown on a call, so the parent and the interpreter both need the paper in hand before it starts. Send the draft plan or the page with the change in the booking notes, and give the parent a copy. During the call, staff can name the page and the heading they are speaking about.

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for an IEP meeting

Phone is for the parts of IEP work that are only talk. A full team meeting with reports on the table usually calls for a different setting.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for IEP calls

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Can a full IEP meeting be held by phone?

The school and the parent decide. If you choose phone, book the full length of the meeting, and we can change the booking to a video session if the call turns out to need the plan on screen, subject to the interpreter's availability.

02Can two parents who live apart join the same call?

Yes. Each person dials the same number and enters the same access code from wherever they are, and the interpreter interprets for everyone on the line.

03How is a phone call priced?

By the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. Book a little longer than you expect, because every sentence is said twice and the parent may have questions.

04How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

05Which languages can you interpret by phone for IEP calls?

70 languages. Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese and Tagalog are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

06Èske entèprèt Pendjabi Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt pendjabi ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
