When video is used
Contract negotiations are held by video when the teams are in different cities or countries and cannot meet in one room. Each team joins from its own office, and the draft can be shown on screen while a clause is discussed. Video is also used when no interpreter for the language works near either office, because our interpreters join from anywhere in the US.
Who takes part
Each side sends its negotiating team, with a lead who speaks for the company. Attorneys for either side join to review the terms and the wording of the draft, working from the same version as the team. A negotiation turns on exact wording, so each statement is interpreted in full. The interpreter does not tidy up a counter offer, and uses the same word each time the draft repeats a defined term. They are neutral, work for neither company, and keep the talks confidential. They do not advise either side on a price or a term.

When someone refers to a clause, the clause number or the page helps everyone find it on screen. Each speaker pauses after a part, and the interpreter then gives it in the other language.
