Typical sessions
Video school meetings
Video is used when the parent and the school team are in different places, or when no interpreter for the family's language works near the school. The school sends one meeting link, the parent joins it, and the interpreter joins the same link as a guest from anywhere in the US. Staff can show a plan or a report on screen while it is interpreted.

The parent or guardian joins to hear about their child and to ask questions. In an IEP meeting, the special education teacher and a general education teacher report on the child's progress, a district representative joins for the district, and the school psychologist or another evaluator explains the evaluation results. A 504 meeting is led by the 504 coordinator. The student sometimes joins too, and the interpreter joins as one more participant.
The interpreter's job is to let the parent follow the meeting as easily as the staff do. Everything said on the call is interpreted in full, in both directions, including the parent's questions to the teachers, so nothing is left out or shortened. The interpreter takes no side, keeps what they hear confidential, and does not advise or comment.
Teacher and parent
Put the draft plan, the evaluation report or the agenda in the booking notes, with the child's name, so the interpreter has read the terms before the meeting starts. On the call, teachers report in short parts and wait for the interpreter, so the parent hears each part before asking a question.
On-site, video or phone
Video keeps a meeting going when people are in different places. Another setting suits the meetings below better.

Book an interpreter in the building when the family comes to school and the meeting has many people at the table, such as enrollment or an evaluation meeting.
On-Site Interpretation for Schools
Video fits an IEP or 504 meeting where the parent and some of the team join from home or from other buildings, and a plan is shown on screen.

Phone fits a short call with a parent who has no video, when nothing needs to be shown.
