Courts we go to

On-site interpreters for court hearings in state trial courts, family court and municipal court

Courts often appoint their own interpreters for proceedings on the record. The interpreter you book is for your own communication with your client, or for a hearing where the court lets you bring one, so check with the court first if you are not sure whether it has appointed one.

State trial courts

We interpret civil, criminal and other hearings in a state's trial courts, from a short calendar call to a longer hearing. Give us the courthouse, the courtroom and the time from your notice, so the interpreter knows where to report.

Family court

Family court hears custody, support and divorce cases. Copy the address from your notice into the booking, and add the names of the parties, so the interpreter knows them before the day.

Municipal court

Municipal courts hear traffic, ordinance and other local cases. Give us the city and the courthouse address, and add the charge or the case type, so the interpreter knows the terms.

Hearings in court

What to know about court hearings with an interpreter in the room

When the interpreter comes in person

Most court hearings are held in a courtroom, with the judge, the attorneys and the parties in one place. The interpreter you book sits with your client, so the hearing and the conversations before and after it are interpreted in the same place. Book on-site when your client will be at the courthouse, or when the court has set the hearing in person.

Who takes part

In the courtroom, the judge hears the case and makes the rulings, and the clerk calls it and keeps the court's record. Attorneys speak for each side. The party, or a witness, answers when the judge asks a question. When one of them speaks another language, the interpreter sits with that person.

The interpreter's role

With the interpreter beside them, your client can follow the hearing and answer the judge the way an English speaker would. Everything the judge and the attorneys say is interpreted in full, and your client's answers go into English as they were said. The interpreter does not explain rulings, give opinions or take sides, and keeps what they hear confidential.

Talks before and after

Most clients have questions right before a hearing and right after it. Start the booking when you meet your client at the courthouse, so the interpreter is there for the talk in the hallway, the hearing itself and your explanation of what the judge decided.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for court hearings

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Do you send interpreters to courthouses outside large cities?

Yes, in all 50 states. Large metro areas have the most interpreters, and for a courthouse outside one we still send an interpreter, with more notice.

02Can one interpreter go to two courthouses on one day?

The interpreter reports to one address per booking. For a second courthouse, make a second booking with its own start time.

03Can the same interpreter come to the next hearing?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

04How is an on-site court hearing priced?

Your booking is priced by the hour, and the total shows before you pay. Start it at the time you plan to meet your client at the courthouse, because the hours you book are the hours you pay for.

05Can one interpreter work for two parties who speak different languages?

No. An interpreter works between English and one other language, so a second language needs its own booking, which can use the same courthouse address.

06Which languages do you send interpreters for at court hearings?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean and Russian are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Grèk Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt grèk ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
