Who is interviewed

On-site interpreters for green card interviews for marriage-based, family-based and employment-based cases

The questions depend on how the green card application was filed. We interpret for all three kinds of applicants at the field office.

Marriage-based applicants

The officer asks the couple about their marriage and their life together, and the spouses are usually interviewed together. If both speak the same language, one interpreter works for the couple.

Other family-based applicants

Applicants sponsored by a relative, such as a parent or a sibling, are interviewed on Form I-485 as well. The officer reviews the original documents that show the family relationship.

Employment-based applicants

Some employment-based applicants are called in for an interview. The officer asks about the application and about the applicant's job, and the interpreter interprets each question and answer.

Green card interviews

What to know about green card interviews with an interpreter

When an interpreter comes

A green card interview takes place at the USCIS field office named in the notice, in person. The applicant, and often the petitioning spouse, go to the office on the day, and an interpreter we send meets them there. We send interpreters to these interviews on-site only. In areas with few interpreters for the language, the dispatcher may send one from another city, and the extra trip is its own line in the quote.

Who takes part

The officer interviews the applicant about the application and looks through the original documents. In a marriage-based case the petitioning spouse is interviewed too, usually together with the applicant. If an attorney represents the applicant, the attorney attends. The interpreter works between the officer and whoever is being interviewed, for the length of the interview.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter makes the interview as clear as it would be in English, so the applicant answers the question the officer actually asked. The interpreter speaks in the first person and interprets everything in both directions, without shortening an answer or tidying it up. The interpreter is neutral, keeps the interview confidential, and gives no opinion on the case.

Spouses together

Spouses one at a time

Spouses interviewed apart

The officer usually interviews a couple together, but may interview the spouses separately. The interpreter then interprets for each person in turn, so the hours you book should allow for both interviews. Add a note to the booking if you expect the officer to see the spouses apart.

FAQ

Questions about interpreters for green card interviews

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What does the interpreter bring to the interview?

Identification, which the interpreter shows at the office. The interpreter is also sworn in and signs Form G-1256, the Declaration for Interpreted USCIS Interview.

02What if my spouse speaks a different language than I do?

One booking includes English and one other language, with one interpreter. A spouse who needs a second language needs a second booking, which can use the same address.

03What should we put in the booking notes?

The names of everyone attending, and the spelling of names and places as they appear on the application. The interpreter reads the notes before the day.

04If USCIS schedules a second interview, can we ask for the same interpreter?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

05How is a green card interview priced?

The price follows the hours you book, and you see the total before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded, so book enough hours for the whole interview.

06Which languages can you interpret at green card interviews?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Portuguese and French are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Vyetnamyen Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt vyetnamyen ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal.
