Parts of a trial

On-site interpreters for trials, from witness testimony to counsel table and breaks

A trial runs over several days and has several parts. Tell us which of them the interpreter you book will work on, since the court may appoint its own interpreter for some of them.

Temwayaj temwen

Where the court lets a party bring an interpreter, the one you book interprets the testimony of a witness who speaks another language, in both directions and on the record. Ask the court before the trial how it wants this arranged.

Conversations at counsel table

During pauses in the proceeding, you and your client talk through the interpreter, one speaker at a time and in both directions. The interpreter sits with your client for the whole day.

Meetings during breaks

Recesses and lunch breaks are when attorneys explain what happened and what comes next. Book the interpreter for the whole day, so the same person is there for the break meetings and for the testimony.

Trials in person

What to know about trials with an interpreter in the courtroom

Days in the courtroom

Trials are held in a courtroom, with the judge, the jury and the witnesses in the same room. The interpreter you book sits with your client or your witness there. A trial runs for several days and each day is its own booking, so book every day once the trial dates are set, and ask for the same interpreter on each. If few interpreters for the language live near the courthouse, the trip is quoted as a separate line when you book.

Who takes part

The judge presides, and the jury decides the facts. Attorneys question witnesses and speak for their clients. Witnesses testify under oath, and a court reporter writes down the record. The defendant or the parties attend as well. All of them speak one at a time, and the interpreter sits with whoever speaks another language and interprets each part after the speaker pauses.

The interpreter's role

Testimony is a person's own account, so the interpreter speaks in the first person and does not summarize. The job is to make the trial as clear for your client or witness as it is for everyone who speaks English, with questions and answers interpreted in full and in both directions. The interpreter takes no side, gives no advice or comments, and keeps what they hear confidential.

A trial week

Day 1Day 2Day 3Verdict

Several trial days

Each trial day is its own booking. Send the trial schedule with the first booking and book every day once the dates are set, so the days are covered before the trial starts. You can ask for the same interpreter on each day, and we assign them when they are available.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for a trial

A trial is usually held in the courtroom, so on-site is the usual choice. Video and phone fit the parts around it.

  • Sou plas

Book an interpreter in the courtroom for testimony, for counsel table and for meetings during breaks.

  • Videyo (VRI)

Video fits a witness who testifies remotely when the court allows it, and preparation sessions before the trial.

Entèpretasyon a distans pa videyo pou pwosè
  • Telefòn (OPI)

Phone fits the calls around the trial, such as updates to your client in the evening and scheduling witnesses.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for trials

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What if the same interpreter is not available on a later day?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

02What if the trial date moves?

Cancellation is in writing. A booked day cancelled more than seven days ahead is refunded in full, 75% is refunded from seven days down to 48 hours ahead, and nothing is refunded inside 48 hours.

03Does the interpreter need to be court-certified for a trial?

Most state courts require a certified or registered interpreter for testimony on the record. We assign a court-certified interpreter, with the name and credentials sent to you before the first day.

04Can I send the exhibit list to the interpreter?

Yes. Add the exhibit list, the witness names and the terms of the case to the booking notes in your dashboard, and the interpreter reads them before the trial.

05How is a trial priced?

Each trial day is priced by the hour, and the total shows before you pay. Every question and answer is said twice, so a day with testimony runs longer than it would in English.

06Which languages can we book for a trial?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and Korean are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages, such as Burmese or Pashto, need more notice, so book as soon as the trial dates are set.

07Èske entèprèt Vyetnamyen Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt vyetnamyen ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.

08Èske Texliff kouvri tout dyalèk Vyetnamyen yo?

Sid Vyetnamyen (Saigon) pi komen nan kominote ameriken ki andeyò DMV; Northern Vietnamese yo itilize nan gouvènman an ak medya fòmèl. Nou matche dyalèk ak rejyon orijin moun ki pale a.
