On-site interpreters for medical appointments in exam rooms, at the bedside, before surgery and at discharge

Care teams see patients in several kinds of buildings. Each card names the details that help the interpreter find the right room.

Clinic exam rooms

An outpatient visit usually takes place in an exam room, with the patient, the doctor and often a nurse. Put the clinic, the floor or suite and the doctor's name in the notes.

Hospital bedsides

For a patient who has been admitted, the interpreter goes to the room and interprets for the doctors and nurses who come in. Add the unit and the room number to the notes.

Surgery centers

Before a procedure, the surgeon and the nurses go over the plan, and the patient asks questions and gives consent. Book the interpreter for the whole pre-op visit.

Hospital discharge

Before the patient goes home, a nurse goes over medicines, follow-up visits and warning signs. Every instruction, and every question from the patient or the family, is interpreted in full.

Visits in person

What to know about in-person medical appointments with an interpreter

When the interpreter comes in person

Most medical appointments are held in person, and the interpreter sits next to the patient in the exam room or at the bedside. The interpreter reports to the one address you booked, so give the building and the department where the care team sees the patient. Our dispatcher looks for interpreters closest to that address first. Coverage is densest in large metro areas, and in smaller towns we still send an interpreter, with more notice.

Who takes part

The doctor examines the patient and explains the diagnosis and the plan, while a nurse or medical assistant takes the history and checks the medicines. Family members often come along and can add details about how the patient has been. The interpreter sits next to the patient, so the patient hears the interpretation at close range.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter makes the conversation as clear as it would be in one language. Each statement from the doctor or the nurse is interpreted for the patient in full, and each question or answer from the patient is interpreted back, in the first person. The interpreter takes no side, keeps the visit confidential, and leaves the diagnosis and the treatment advice to the doctor.

Several patients in one booking

A clinic that sees several patients who speak the same language in a row can book one block of hours at one address, and the same interpreter stays for the block. Put the order of the appointments in the notes. A second language needs its own booking.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for a medical appointment

Booking in person keeps the interpreter next to the patient for the whole visit. The other two settings suit narrower cases.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for medical appointments

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What does the interpreter need to get into the building?

Tell us the entrance, where to park and who to ask for at check-in, and any badge or screening steps the facility asks of visitors.

02Can we book the same interpreter for a patient who comes back?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

03Can a family member or a child interpret instead?

Hospitals and clinics that receive federal funds are expected to provide a qualified interpreter, and should not rely on a patient's minor child to interpret except in an emergency. A family member can still sit in with the patient if the clinic allows it.

04How is an on-site appointment priced?

You pay by the hour, and the total shows before you do. Book the full length of the visit, including check-in and the wait for the doctor, because unused time is not refunded.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages are available in person?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian and Korean are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages, and visits far from a large city, need more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Kwowat Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt kwowat ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
