When phone works

Phone interpreters for mediation calls, from follow-up sessions to client calls and scheduling

The main session of a mediation is easiest with the interpreter on video or in the room. A phone interpreter is the simpler choice for the calls around it.

Follow-up sessions

After the main session, the mediator may hold a short call to work through the points still open. The interpreter dials in and interprets for the party who speaks another language.

Calls with your client

Attorneys call a client before the mediation to explain what will happen, and afterward to go over the result. Each call is booked apart from the mediation, and you can ask for the same interpreter.

Scheduling and intake

A short call to confirm the date, the place and what to bring can be interpreted by phone. Add the mediator's name and the case name to the booking notes.

Mediation by phone

What to know about mediation calls with an interpreter

When phone is used

Phone is used for the parts of a mediation that need no screen and no papers on the table, such as a short follow-up session or a call to settle the last open point. The mediator and the parties agree on it beforehand. A full session with several offers going back and forth usually runs better by video or in person.

Who is on the line

The mediator dials in with the parties and their attorneys, and an insurance representative sometimes joins as well. When a party speaks another language, an interpreter dials in with the same access code. Because the interpreter dials in from anywhere in the US, the language does not have to be available near the mediator.

The interpreter's role

Nobody on a phone call can see who is about to speak, so each speaker pauses after a few sentences. The interpreter then interprets that part for the party and carries the party's reply back to the mediator. Everything is interpreted in full, and the interpreter stays neutral and does not advise on any offer.

Private talks by phone

When the mediator wants to speak with each side alone, the mediator arranges those calls, and the interpreter is on the call with the party who speaks another language. Some of the time goes to waiting while the mediator talks with the other side, so book all the time the mediator has set aside.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for a mediation

Phone works for short calls around a mediation. A full session with private rooms goes better by video or with the interpreter at the party's side.

  • Sou plas

Book an interpreter in person for the main session, especially a full day with several private rooms.

    Entèpretasyon sou plas pou medyasyon
  • Videyo (VRI)

Video is better when the mediator wants breakout rooms for private sessions, or when the parties need to look at a draft on screen.

Entèpretasyon a distans pa videyo pou medyasyon
  • Telefòn (OPI)

Phone fits a follow-up call or a client call when nothing needs to be shown on a screen.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for mediations

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Who sets up the dial-in line?

We do. The number and the access code come with your confirmation, and you share them with the mediator and the others.

02Can the interpreter add someone to the call?

Yes. Once everyone is on the line, the interpreter can add a third party, for example an attorney who is calling from another office.

03Can a whole mediation be held by phone?

The mediator and the parties decide, and an interpreter can join a mediation held entirely by phone. If the mediator wants to show a draft on screen or use breakout rooms, video is the better fit.

04How is a mediation call priced?

The price is by the time you book, and you see the total before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking, so time you do not use is not refunded.

05Is the call recorded?

Not unless you ask us to. The line is encrypted, and the interpreter works under an NDA.

06Ki lang nou kouvri pa telefòn?

70 languages, into and out of English. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean and Portuguese are the easiest to schedule, and a rare language needs more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Japonè Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt japonè ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
