Parts of the visit

Video interpreters for medical appointments, from intake and the exam to diagnosis and questions

The patient and the care team sit together in the exam room, and the interpreter is on the screen. Each card is a part of the visit the interpreter takes part in.

Intake and history

The nurse or medical assistant asks about symptoms, allergies and medicines, and the patient asks questions of their own. All of it is interpreted in both directions, not only the doctor's part.

The exam

The doctor gives short instructions during the exam and asks where something hurts. The patient's answers are interpreted for the doctor, so the doctor hears the patient's own description.

Diagnosis and plan

The doctor explains what was found, what treatment comes next and when to return. Add the names of tests or referrals to the notes, so the interpreter can prepare the terms.

Questions at the end

Before the visit ends, the patient can ask about the plan, the medicines and the next appointment. Each question and each answer is interpreted in full, and the interpreter does not answer for the doctor.

Visits by video

What to know about video medical appointments with an interpreter

When video is used

When no interpreter for the patient's language works near the clinic, the interpreter joins by video instead, on a tablet or cart that the clinic brings into the room. The patient and the care team stay together in the exam room or at the bedside, and only the interpreter is remote. A visit where the doctor and the patient are themselves in different places is booked as a telehealth appointment.

Who takes part

The doctor or nurse practitioner examines the patient, asks about symptoms and explains the diagnosis and the plan. A nurse or medical assistant asks the intake questions, goes over the medicine list and answers practical questions. The patient speaks for themselves, and a family member may sit in to listen or add details. The interpreter joins from the screen and speaks to each person in turn.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make the visit as clear as it would be if the patient and the care team spoke one language. Everything is interpreted in full, in both directions, including the questions a patient asks the nurse. The interpreter adds no comments, keeps the visit private and explains nothing about the diagnosis. A relative, and above all a child, should not be asked to interpret in their place.

Setting up the screen

Put the tablet or cart where the patient and the doctor can both see and hear the interpreter, and open the link before the patient is called in. If you do not have the link when you book, add it in your dashboard later, together with the clinic, the doctor and the room.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between video, on-site and phone for a medical appointment

FAQ

Questions about video interpreters for medical appointments

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Can the interpreter join the tablet or cart our clinic already uses?

Yes. Put your meeting link in the booking, and the interpreter joins it as a guest on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet. If you have no link, we create one in the Texliff room, which opens in the browser without an install.

02Is the appointment kept private?

Yes. Every session is under an NDA and connections are encrypted. Nothing is recorded unless you request it, and healthcare customers can ask for a BAA.

03Is this the same as a telehealth appointment?

No. Here the patient and the care team are in the same room and only the interpreter is remote. In a telehealth appointment the doctor and the patient are in different places, and it is booked as a telehealth appointment.

04What if the appointment is moved to another day?

Cancel in writing. A full refund applies when you cancel more than seven days before, 75% is refunded between seven days and 48 hours before, and nothing is refunded in the last 48 hours.

05How is a video appointment priced?

The price is per hour for the hours you book, and you see the total before paying. Book the whole visit, from intake to the last instructions, because unused time is not refunded.

06Which languages can I book for a medical appointment?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Haitian Creole and Tagalog are the easiest to schedule. A rarer language such as Burmese or Pashto needs more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Tay Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt tay ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
