Typical Urdu bookings
Parts of the interview
An interpreter is booked for applicants with one of two exemptions, and interprets two parts of the interview.
The officer goes through the applicant's answers on the N-400, and the applicant answers under oath. Every question and answer is interpreted in full, so the officer hears the whole answer.
Applicants who are exempt from the English requirement may take the civics test in their own language. The interpreter interprets each question and the applicant's answer in full.
Some applicants are exempt from the English test because of their age and their years as a permanent resident. They take the interview in their own language, with the interpreter.
Applicants with a medical exemption, which is requested on Form N-648, are exempt from the English requirement as well. They also use the interpreter for the N-400 questions and the civics test.
Naturalization interviews
The naturalization interview is held in person at a USCIS field office, and the English test and the civics test are part of it. Because of that, an interpreter is only for applicants who are exempt from the English requirement. We interpret these interviews on-site only, so the interpreter comes to the address on the notice. A language with few interpreters nearby may need more notice.

The USCIS officer reviews the N-400 with the applicant and gives the civics test. The applicant answers under oath, in their own language. If an attorney represents the applicant, the attorney attends as well. The interpreter works between the officer and the applicant from the first question to the last.
The interpreter's job is to let the officer and the applicant understand each other as well as if they shared a language. For the N-400 answers, the interpreter speaks in the first person, so the officer hears the applicant's own words. For the civics test, each question and each answer is interpreted in full, and the interpreter never hints at an answer. The interpreter is neutral and keeps the interview confidential.
N-400 questions
Civics test
Add the spelling of the applicant's name and address as they appear on the N-400, and the names of anyone attending. The interpreter reads the notes before the day, so the names and places are ready when they come up in the interview.
On-site, video or phone
Naturalization interviews are held in person at a field office, so the interpreter comes to the same address. Video and phone are for other sessions.

An interpreter comes to the field office and stays with the applicant through the N-400 questions and the civics test.

We provide interpreters for USCIS interviews on-site only. Video suits a meeting with your attorney about the N-400 or an exemption.

We provide interpreters for USCIS interviews on-site only. Phone suits a short call to your attorney, for example about a document.
