Remote testimony

Video interpreters for trial testimony from witnesses in another state or abroad

A witness testifies by video only when the court allows it, and the court names the platform. Parties book a video interpreter around a trial in the situations below.

Witnesses in another state

A witness who lives far from the courthouse may testify by video if the court allows it. The interpreter joins the court's link as a guest and interprets each question and answer for the witness.

Witnesses abroad

Some trials need testimony from a witness in another country, if the court permits it. Add the court's link to the booking as soon as you have it, and tell us the witness's language.

Witness preparation

Before the trial, attorneys go through the questions with a witness who speaks another language. Book each preparation session separately from the trial days, and ask for the same interpreter if you want one person throughout.

Trials by video

What to know about trial testimony by video with an interpreter

When video is used

A trial is held in a courtroom, and video comes in for one part of it, a witness who testifies from somewhere else. A court may allow this for a witness who lives in another state or abroad, and the court decides each request. Video is also used for preparation sessions before the trial, and when no interpreter for the witness's language works near the courthouse.

Who takes part

The judge presides and decides how the remote testimony is taken. Attorneys question the witness, and the witness answers under oath from another place. A court reporter writes down the record, and the jury hears the testimony in the courtroom. The interpreter joins the same link as a guest, and each speaker pauses so the interpreter can interpret that part.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter interprets each question into the witness's language and each answer into English, in the first person and in full, so the record holds the witness's own words. Everything said to the witness is interpreted, including the judge's instructions. The interpreter works for neither side, adds nothing, explains nothing and keeps what they hear confidential.

Exhibits for the witness

Before the trial, order certified translations of the exhibits that are in another language. Add the exhibit list and the translated copies to the booking notes in your dashboard, so the interpreter knows the documents the witness will be asked about.

On-site, video or phone

Choosing between video, on-site and phone for a trial

Most of a trial is held in the courtroom. Use video for the part of it where someone is somewhere else.

  • On-site

Book an interpreter in the courtroom for the parts of the trial where your client or witness is at the courthouse.

    On-Site Interpretation for Trials
  • Video (VRI)

Video fits a witness who testifies from another place when the court allows it, and the preparation sessions before.

  • Phone (OPI)

Phone suits the short calls with a witness or client between trial days, when no document has to be shown.

FAQ

Questions about video interpreters for trial testimony

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Which platform does the interpreter join?

Whichever platform the court names, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. For a preparation session, we create a link in the Texliff room and add it to your project.

02Does a witness abroad need to install anything to join?

It depends on the platform the court names. A Texliff room link, which we can create for a preparation session, opens in the browser with nothing to install.

03Can two witnesses who speak different languages share one booking?

No. Each booking pairs English with one other language, so the second witness needs a second session. Both sessions can use the same link.

04How is a remote trial session priced?

The price is per hour for the hours you book, shown before you pay. An interpreted answer takes longer than an English one, so book more time than an English-speaking witness would need.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can you interpret for witnesses testifying by video?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian and Arabic are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

07Are your Hebrew interpreters certified?

Yes. Court-certified and medically credentialed Hebrew interpreters are assigned to legal and clinical matters — Federal Court Interpreter Certification, state court rosters, CCHI / NBCMI for medical. For community, educational and corporate settings we assign professionally trained interpreters matched to the subject.
