Clinic calls

What to know about clinic phone calls with an interpreter

When phone is used

Clinics use the phone for short conversations in which nobody has to see the patient, such as a test result, a medication question or a scheduling call. A patient with no video or no data can also have an audio-only visit. The interpreter dials in from anywhere in the US, which helps when no interpreter for the language works near the clinic.

Who is on the line

The doctor, nurse or scheduler who is making or taking the call is on the line with the patient, and the scheduler books and confirms visits. The patient answers and asks questions, and a relative may listen from another place. Once the clinic and the patient are on the line, the interpreter can add a third party, such as a relative or another provider.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter cannot rely on a picture, so each speaker finishes a part before the interpreter interprets it. The patient's reply is interpreted back in full, and doses and instructions are interpreted exactly as spoken. The interpreter does not advise the patient or comment on the result, and keeps the call confidential.

Reaching the patient

The dial-in number and the access code are in the confirmation, so send both to the patient with the time of the call. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking, and unused time is not refunded, so confirm the time with the patient first. On a medication call every question and answer is said twice, so allow room for the patient's own questions.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for clinic visits

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters at clinics

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01What does the patient need to take a clinic call?

A phone, the dial-in number and the access code from the confirmation. There is no app to install and no link to open.

02Can a call become a video visit?

Yes, if the clinician decides the patient needs to be seen. Ask us to change the booking to video, which depends on the interpreter's availability.

03Can a counseling check-in be done by phone?

Yes. Book it like any other call, for the time the therapist plans, and ask for the same interpreter if the client has one already.

04Can a relative who speaks a third language join the call?

Not with the same interpreter. A booking is for English and one other language, so a third language needs a second booking.

05How is a clinic phone call priced?

Phone calls are charged by the booked time, and the total shows before you pay. Book the length of the call you expect plus a few minutes, because the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking.

06Which languages are available for clinic calls?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic and Korean are the easiest to schedule by phone, and rare languages need more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Ouzbèk Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt ouzbèk ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
