When phone works

Phone interpreters for telehealth appointments held by audio only

On the phone, the visit itself is the call, not a call about a visit. Providers hold a telehealth visit by audio only in the situations below.

Patients without video

Some patients have no camera, no device that joins a video call or no connection that holds one. The provider holds the visit by phone, and the interpreter dials in too.

Visits that need no picture

Providers hold some visits by phone because nothing needs to be seen, such as a medicine review or a talk about results. The provider sets the visit type, and you book the interpreter for the same time.

Routine check-ins

A short check-in after a new medicine or a change of plan can be held by phone. Book the time the check-in needs, with room for interpretation.

Audio-only visits

What to know about audio-only telehealth visits with an interpreter

When a visit is audio only

An audio-only telehealth visit is a full medical visit held by phone, with the provider asking about symptoms and giving the plan. Providers choose it when the patient has no device or connection for video, or when the visit needs no picture. The interpreter dials in from anywhere in the US, so a language that few people speak near the clinic can still be booked. The patient needs no app, link or screen.

Who takes part

The provider is on the line from the clinic or another office, asks about symptoms and explains the plan. The patient talks from home or wherever they are. A family member can be added to the call when the patient wants someone to listen or to help with the medicine list. The interpreter dials in and adds the patient once the provider is on the line.

The interpreter's role

The provider cannot see the patient, so the interpreter's words carry the whole visit. Each speaker pauses, and the interpreter interprets that part in full, in the first person, before the next one starts. The interpreter is neutral and keeps the visit confidential. They do not describe how the patient seems or add to what the patient said.

Medicine list ahead

Send the patient the medicine list and any instructions before the visit, because nothing can be shown on a phone call. Add the same list to the booking notes, and the interpreter has the names and doses in front of them while the provider goes through them.

Sou plas, pa videyo oswa pa telefòn

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for a telehealth appointment

Phone suits a visit that needs no picture. If the provider needs to see the patient, or the patient is in the clinic, another setting fits better.

  • Sou plas

Pa disponib pou seyans sa a

A patient who comes to the clinic needs an on-site interpreter, which is a separate booking.

  • Videyo (VRI)

Book video when the provider needs to see something and the patient has a device that can join.

Entèpretasyon a distans pa videyo pou randevou teleswen
  • Telefòn (OPI)

Phone fits audio-only visits and patients who have no video device or connection.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for telehealth visits

Sa yo nou tande pi souvan, reponn pa ekip dispatch ak jesyon pwojè nou yo.

Ou pa jwenn sa w ap chèche a?

01Is an audio-only visit recorded?

Only if you ask. The interpreter is under an NDA for every visit, and connections are encrypted.

02What if the provider needs to see the patient?

We can change the booking to a video session, subject to the interpreter's availability.

03Can the patient call in from a landline?

Yes. The patient can dial in from any phone, whether a landline or a mobile.

04How is an audio-only visit priced?

The price is for the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. Add a little room at the start for everyone to dial in, because the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can I book for an audio-only visit?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Korean and Haitian Creole are the easiest to schedule. A language that is harder to find needs more notice.

07Èske entèprèt Italyen Texliff yo sètifye?

Wi. Entèprèt italyen ki sètifye pou tribinal epi ki gen kalifikasyon medikal yo asiyen nan zafè legal ak klinik — Sètifikasyon Entèprèt Tribinal Federal, lis tribinal eta yo, CCHI / NBCMI pou medikal. Pou anviwònman kominote, edikasyon ak antrepriz nou bay entèprèt ki resevwa fòmasyon pwofesyonèl ki matche ak sijè a.
