What to know about dental phone calls with an interpreter
When phone is used
Dental offices use the phone for calls that need no picture, such as booking a visit, going over an estimate or checking on a patient after a procedure. Such calls happen around the treatment, not in the chair, so the interpreter can dial in from anywhere in the US. A dentist who wants to see the area that hurts books a video call instead.
Who is on the line
A staff member from the front desk or the dental team calls about a visit, an estimate or healing, and talks with the patient, who answers and asks questions. A parent may listen in on a child's call. The interpreter interprets for each person on the line in turn, whether the topic is a visit, a figure or a symptom.

The interpreter's role
Without a picture, the interpreter waits until the speaker finishes a part, then interprets it. Prices, insurance terms and appointment times are interpreted exactly as said, and the patient's reply is interpreted back in full. The interpreter gives no advice or opinion about treatment or insurance, and keeps the call confidential.

Estimates and insurance terms
Figures and insurance terms need to be exact, so send the written estimate to the patient before the call if you can. Both sides then follow the same numbers. Add the treatment names and the plan details to the booking notes, so the interpreter can prepare. On an estimate call each figure is said twice, so allow time for the patient's questions.

01Does a patient need a smartphone?
No. Any phone works, including a landline, because the patient only dials a number and enters the access code.
