Interpreters at a factory

What to know about having an interpreter at your factory

Sessions held at the plant

Training, shift meetings and onboarding happen at the plant, so the interpreter comes to the same room or area. Workers and supervisors talk to each other directly, and a worker can ask a question as it comes up. OSHA expects safety training to be given in a language and vocabulary workers understand, and an interpreter makes that possible for a crew whose home language is not English. Put the room in the booking notes.

Who takes part

Supervisors lead shift meetings and toolbox talks, and trainers run safety and equipment training. HR meets new hires on their first day and talks with workers after an incident. Workers who speak another language take part in all of them, and the interpreter stays next to them, so they hear the supervisor, trainer or HR and can answer in their own language.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to give workers the same information as everyone who speaks English, with nothing shortened. Instructions, warnings and questions are interpreted in full, in both directions. The interpreter is neutral, keeps what they hear confidential, and adds no advice or opinion of their own about how a task should be done.

Short sessions in a block

Toolbox talks and shift meetings are short. The supervisor says one point, pauses for the interpreter, and then goes on to the next. When several of them follow each other at the plant, such as one at the start of each shift, they can share one block of hours at the same address. Send the schedule and the room for each session in the booking notes.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for a factory

An interpreter in the room lets workers ask a question as it comes up. Video and phone suit the cases below.

  • Presencial

An interpreter in person suits safety training, onboarding and shift meetings, where the crew sits together in one room.

  • Video (VRI)

Video suits a plant where no interpreter for the language works nearby, or an HR interview with a worker at another site.

Interpretación remota por video para fábricas
  • Teléfono (OPI)

Phone suits a short briefing for staff away from a screen, or a follow-up call after an incident.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions about on-site interpreters for factories

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01Where do we put the safety gear and check-in rules?

Write them in the booking notes in your dashboard, including the gate and the check-in steps. Pass the interpreter's name to the gate once you have it.

02Can the interpreter move around the plant during a session?

Each booking is for one address, and the interpreter interprets where the session is held. Customer audits and plant inspections are the exception, where the interpreter can walk through the facility as the work requires.

03What if the crew speaks two languages?

A booking pairs English with one other language, so a crew that speaks two languages needs a second interpreter. Book that one for the same address and time.

04How many hours should we book for a training?

Book the full length of the training. The trainer pauses every few sentences, so a session takes longer with an interpreter, and unused time is not refunded.

05Can we ask for the same interpreter each week?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

06Which languages are available for plant workers?

70 languages. Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Arabic and Portuguese are the easiest to schedule. Rarer languages need more notice.
