Calls with families

Phone interpreters for CPS calls about follow-ups, scheduling and safety plans

Caseworkers use the phone for contact between meetings. Phone interpreters are booked for the calls below.

Follow-up calls

After a visit or a meeting, the caseworker may call a parent to ask a question or to confirm what was agreed. Book the time you expect the call to take.

Scheduling calls

A call to set up the next visit or family meeting is mostly dates, times and places. The interpreter interprets each one in full, so the parent knows where to be and when.

Safety plan check-ins

A safety plan lists the steps a family has agreed to take. The caseworker calls to ask how the steps are going, and the interpreter interprets the questions and the parent's answers.

Phone calls

What to know about child protective services calls by phone with an interpreter

When phone is used

Phone is used for contact that does not need a visit, such as a follow-up question, a change of date or a check on how the family is doing. Nobody has to travel or open a link, and the parent can use any phone. Phone also works when the family speaks a language with no interpreter nearby, since interpreters dial in from anywhere. A meeting where people need to see each other or look at a document is better held by video or in person.

Who is on the line

The caseworker or investigator leads the call and asks the questions. The parent or caregiver answers, and a supervisor sometimes joins. The interpreter dials in as well, and once everyone is on the line, the interpreter can add a third party, such as a relative, to the call.

The interpreter's role

With no video, the interpreter relies on turns. The caseworker or the parent finishes a part and pauses, and the interpreter interprets it in full for the other person, in the first person. The interpreter stays neutral and keeps the call confidential. Advice for the parent and explanations of the agency's decisions are left to the caseworker.

Dial-in details

The confirmation holds a dial-in number and an access code. Share both with the parent before the call, and add the caseworker's and the parent's names to the booking notes. Nothing can be shown over the phone, so send a date, an address or a name in writing beforehand.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for child protective services interviews

Phone is for short contact between meetings. For anything longer, or a meeting where people sit down together, another setting works better.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions about phone interpreters for child protective services calls

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01Who can hear what is said on the call?

Only the people on the line. The interpreter works under an NDA, connections are encrypted, and we do not record unless you ask.

02What if the parent is not available at the booked time?

The interpreter stays reserved for the booked time, and time that goes unused is not refunded. Cancellation is in writing, with a full refund more than seven days before, 75% between seven days and 48 hours before, and no refund in the last 48 hours.

03¿Qué pasa si la llamada resulta necesitar video?

We can change the booking to a video session, subject to the interpreter's availability.

04Can we ask for the same interpreter for weekly check-in calls?

Name the interpreter in the booking notes. We book the service rather than a particular person, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

05How is a phone call priced?

By the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. A call where every sentence is interpreted takes longer than one in English, so book more time than the English call would need.

06Which languages are available for calls with families?

70 languages. Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.
