In the courthouse

What to know about interpreters in the courthouse

When courts book in person

Courts book an interpreter in person when their own roster has nobody for the language, which happens often with less common languages. The interpreter comes to the courthouse and sits where the court puts them, next to the party or witness who speaks another language. Most state courts require a certified or registered court interpreter for proceedings on the record, so tell us what your court requires when you book.

Who takes part

The judge presides, and the clerk calls the case. The attorneys argue and question witnesses, and the party or witness who speaks another language answers through the interpreter. A trial adds a jury and a court reporter who takes the record. In a mediation program, the mediator takes the judge's place.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to give the person who speaks another language the same access to the proceeding that everyone else has. Everything said is interpreted in full, in both directions, without summaries. The interpreter is neutral and works for neither side. They keep what they hear confidential, and they do not explain, advise or give opinions.

Before the day

BookingName sentClerk checksIn court

Name and credentials for the clerk

You get the interpreter's name and credentials before the day, so the clerk can check them against the court's rules for interpreters. Send the case number, the courtroom and the names of the parties with the booking, and the interpreter reads them before the hearing starts.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for court proceedings

In person is the usual choice for proceedings on the record. Each court decides when video or phone is allowed, so check your rules first.

  • Presencial

In person suits jury trials, hearings with several witnesses and mediation sessions where the parties move between rooms.

  • Video (VRI)

Video fits a remote hearing or testimony the court has allowed, with the interpreter joining the court's platform as a guest.

  • Teléfono (OPI)

Phone fits a status call or a short appearance where the court allows phone and the parties dial in.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions from courts about on-site interpreters

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01What if a hearing is continued?

Cancellation is in writing. A cancellation more than seven days out gets a full refund, one between seven days and 48 hours out gets 75%, and a later one gets no refund.

02Can one booking be for two languages?

No. A booking has one interpreter, who works between English and one other language. For two languages, place two bookings, which can share the same address.

03Do you send interpreters to courthouses outside large cities?

Yes. We cover all 50 states. Coverage is densest in large metro areas, and outside them we still send an interpreter, with more notice.

04¿Cómo se calcula el precio de una reserva presencial?

Booked hours are priced by the hour, and the total shows before you pay. Book enough hours for the proceeding, breaks included, because the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can we book for a courthouse?

70 languages. Spanish, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian and Portuguese are among the easiest to schedule. Less common languages such as Burmese or Pashto need more notice.
