On-site interpreters for hospitals, from pre-surgery visits to bedside rounds and discharge

Hospitals book an interpreter for the moments in a stay when the patient has to understand and decide. Where a card has a page of its own, it links there.

Surgical and specialty clinics see patients before a procedure, and the interpreter sits in the room for those visits.

Inpatient care

What to know about on-site interpreters in a hospital

When the interpreter comes in person

Most hospital care happens face to face, at the bedside, in pre-op rooms and in family meeting rooms. A patient who has been admitted cannot go to an interpreter, so the interpreter goes to the unit. In person is the usual choice where several people speak in turn, at the bed or around a meeting table. When the language is rare near the hospital, the interpreter may come from another city, and the longer trip appears as its own line in the quote.

Who takes part

At the bedside, the doctors and nurses who come in examine the patient and explain the plan, and the patient answers and asks questions. A relative often sits in, and the care team may call a family meeting to go over the diagnosis or a decision. The interpreter stays next to the patient and interprets for everyone in the room.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter makes the talk between the care team and the patient as clear as it would be in one language. Each speaker says a part and stops, and the interpreter gives it to the other side in full. A patient's question to a nurse is interpreted like the doctor's. The interpreter stays neutral, gives no medical opinion, and keeps what is said at the bedside confidential.

Getting to the right room

A hospital has many entrances, floors and units, so put directions in the booking notes. Add the entrance, the floor, the unit, the room, the person to ask for and any check-in step for visitors. In a consent talk the doctor explains, the interpreter interprets, the patient asks, and the interpreter interprets again, so book the whole block the talk needs.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for hospital care

In person is the first choice for a patient who is admitted. Video and phone work for the cases below.

  • Presencial

In person suits rounds, consent talks, family meetings and discharge teaching, where the patient and the staff take turns at the bed.

  • Video (VRI)

Video suits a bedside visit when no interpreter for the language works near the hospital, with the unit joining on a tablet or cart.

  • Teléfono (OPI)

Phone suits short calls to patients and families, such as pre-admission questions, results and follow-up after discharge.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions about on-site interpreters in hospitals

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

02Can a family member interpret for the patient instead?

Hospitals that receive federal funds are expected to use a qualified interpreter, and they should not rely on a patient's minor child to interpret except in an emergency. With a booked interpreter, relatives can take part as family.

03Is a BAA available for our hospital?

Yes, a BAA is available for healthcare customers. Clinical sessions are handled in line with HIPAA, every session is under an NDA, and nothing is recorded unless you ask.

04What if a procedure or a discharge is postponed?

The terms are in writing. A session cancelled more than seven days ahead is refunded in full, 75% is refunded between seven days and 48 hours ahead, and nothing is refunded in the last 48 hours.

05How is an on-site hospital visit priced?

Rounds, consent talks and teaching are priced by the hour you book, with the total shown before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking and unused time is not refunded, so book the full length of the rounds, meeting or teaching.

06Which languages are available in hospitals?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Haitian Creole and Russian are the easiest to book for a hospital. Rare languages, and hospitals far from a large city, need more notice.
