Hacer bien el Árabe right

Parts of the interview

On-site interpreters for naturalization interviews, for the N-400 questions and the civics test

An interpreter is booked for applicants with one of two exemptions, and interprets two parts of the interview.

Questions on the N-400

The officer goes through the applicant's answers on the N-400, and the applicant answers under oath. Every question and answer is interpreted in full, so the officer hears the whole answer.

The civics test

Applicants who are exempt from the English requirement may take the civics test in their own language. The interpreter interprets each question and the applicant's answer in full.

Age and years as a resident

Some applicants are exempt from the English test because of their age and their years as a permanent resident. They take the interview in their own language, with the interpreter.

Medical exemption

Applicants with a medical exemption, which is requested on Form N-648, are exempt from the English requirement as well. They also use the interpreter for the N-400 questions and the civics test.

Entrevistas de naturalización

What to know about naturalization interviews with an interpreter

When an interpreter comes

The naturalization interview is held in person at a USCIS field office, and the English test and the civics test are part of it. Because of that, an interpreter is only for applicants who are exempt from the English requirement. We interpret these interviews on-site only, so the interpreter comes to the address on the notice. A language with few interpreters nearby may need more notice.

Who takes part

The USCIS officer reviews the N-400 with the applicant and gives the civics test. The applicant answers under oath, in their own language. If an attorney represents the applicant, the attorney attends as well. The interpreter works between the officer and the applicant from the first question to the last.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to let the officer and the applicant understand each other as well as if they shared a language. For the N-400 answers, the interpreter speaks in the first person, so the officer hears the applicant's own words. For the civics test, each question and each answer is interpreted in full, and the interpreter never hints at an answer. The interpreter is neutral and keeps the interview confidential.

Booking notes

Add the spelling of the applicant's name and address as they appear on the N-400, and the names of anyone attending. The interpreter reads the notes before the day, so the names and places are ready when they come up in the interview.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions about interpreters for naturalization interviews

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01Can you tell us whether the applicant qualifies for an exemption?

No. We do not decide whether an applicant qualifies. Enter the exemption that applies in the booking notes, such as age and years as a permanent resident or a medical exemption on Form N-648.

02Is the oath ceremony part of the booking?

No. The oath ceremony is a separate event, and this booking is for the interview at the field office.

03Where do I find the address to enter?

On the interview notice from USCIS. Enter that address when you book, and add the room or floor in the dashboard if the notice gives one.

04How is a naturalization interview priced?

The rate is hourly for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Book time for the N-400 questions and the civics test together, because unused time is not refunded.

05Do you send interpreters to field offices outside big cities?

Yes, in all 50 states. Large metro areas have the most interpreters, and a field office far from one needs more notice.

06Which languages do you interpret for naturalization interviews?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian and Arabic are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.
