Visits in person

What to know about in-person interpreters at a social services agency

When in person is used

Social services visits are often held face to face, at a county office, at a community agency or at the family's home. An interpreter who sits in the room lets the caseworker and the client talk to each other directly, so nobody in the family has to interpret for the others. An agency that receives federal funds must provide language help to the clients who need it, and the interpreter comes to whatever address the visit is held at.

Who takes part

A caseworker or an eligibility worker runs the visit, asks the questions and goes through the forms with the client. The client or the parent answers. At a counseling session, a therapist sees the client instead. Other family members may take part in some visits, such as a meeting about a plan. The interpreter sits next to the client.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make the visit as clear for the client as it is for the caseworker, so the questions, the forms and the next steps are all understood. Nothing is shortened, and the interpreter does not skip a hard question or soften an answer. The interpreter takes no side, keeps everything confidential, and does not give advice or explain the agency's decisions.

Home and office visits

Each booking is for one address, so an office appointment and a home visit are two bookings with their own start times. For a home visit, add the names of the people who will be there and where to park. For an office visit, add the room and the check-in steps, and name the forms the caseworker will go through, so the interpreter can read the terms first.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for social services

A caseworker who is with the client can have the interpreter in the room. Video and phone fit when the people are apart.

Cómo funciona

How social services agencies book an on-site interpreter

Choose the date and start time, add the address of the office or the home, and name the client's language and the kind of visit. Each address and each language is its own booking. The price for the booked hours shows right away.

  2. Haga su pedido

Pay online to confirm. The booking opens in your dashboard, where caseworkers add notes such as the room, the check-in steps and the case context.

Our dispatcher begins with the interpreters closest to the address and assigns one who has interpreted social services appointments before, or a medically credentialed interpreter for counseling. The name reaches you before the day.

The interpreter arrives at the address, meets the caseworker, and sits with the client for the booked hours.

Qué recibe

  • The interpreter's name before the day, for the family or the office.
  • No travel line for visits inside the interpreter's metro area.
  • A confirmation in your dashboard and by email for each visit.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions from social services agencies about on-site interpreters

01Can the interpreter go to a client's home?

Yes. Enter the home address as the venue when you book, and the interpreter reports to that address.

02Can the interpreter go along on a series of home visits in one day?

Not on one booking. Each home is its own session with its own address and start time, and the interpreter interprets at that address.

03Can a family member interpret at a child welfare interview?

A family member should not interpret at a child welfare interview. Book an interpreter for the family, so the parents are heard in their own words.

04Can we ask for the same interpreter at every counseling session?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

05How is a long appointment priced?

Hours booked set the price, and you see the total before paying. Book the whole appointment slot, because the interpreter is reserved for it and unused time is not refunded.

06Which languages can a caseworker book in person?

70 languages. Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Russian and Portuguese are among the easiest to schedule. Rare languages, such as Burmese or Pashto, and addresses far from a large city need more notice.
