Remote consultations

What to know about video interpreters for immigration attorneys

When video is used

Video is used when the attorney and the client take part from different places, and when no interpreter for the client's language works near your office. The interpreter joins your link as a guest from anywhere in the US, so a consultation can start without anyone traveling. Consultations, client meetings, declaration sessions and witness interviews all run this way. Interviews at a USCIS office are the exception, since those are booked as on-site sessions.

Who is on the call

The attorney leads the meeting in English, and the client answers in their own language. A paralegal may join to take notes, and a petitioner or relative who is part of the case can join from another location. The interpreter joins the same link as a guest and interprets for everyone on the call.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's job is to make the consultation as clear as it would be if attorney and client spoke the same language. The advice and the answers are interpreted in full, in both directions, with nothing summarized or left out. The interpreter does not give legal advice, opinions or explanations of their own, and keeps what they hear confidential.

Preparing a declaration

When you prepare a written declaration, the client tells their account and the interpreter interprets it for you to write down. Once the draft is done, you read it back and the interpreter interprets each part for the client to review. Both the drafting and the read-back are interpreted, so book time for each.

Choosing between video, on-site and phone for immigration cases

Video suits most of the work with a client before and after an interview. The interview itself, and some visits, call for another setting.

Comment ça marche

How immigration attorneys book a video interpreter

  1. Indiquez vos besoins et obtenez votre devis instantané

Enter the date, start time, platform, your client's language and the kind of meeting. The price for the booked hours shows right away.

  2. Passez commande

Pay online to confirm. The booking opens in your dashboard, where you add the meeting link and notes such as the client's name, the type of case and terms from the file.

  3. Le dispatcheur se lance et affecte un interprète

Our dispatcher assigns a court-certified interpreter and confirms the name and credentials to you before the meeting.

  4. Rejoignez votre séance

The interpreter joins your link as a guest at the booked time. Without a link, we create a Texliff room and add its address to the project.

Ce que vous recevez

  • The interpreter's name and credentials, confirmed before the meeting.
  • Your meeting link kept in the project, or a Texliff room link that opens in the browser without an install.
  • Each booking confirmed in your dashboard and by email.

Chaque fichier et chaque séance sont couverts par un NDA et transmis via une connexion chiffrée. Les dossiers cliniques sont traités conformément à la HIPAA.

FAQ

Questions from immigration attorneys about video interpreters

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Which platforms can the interpreter join?

The interpreter joins as a guest on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet. If you want a link we create, the Texliff room works too.

02Can our client join without installing anything?

Yes, with a Texliff room link. It opens in the browser, so the client can join without installing an app.

03The petitioner speaks a different language from the client. Can one interpreter work for both?

No. One booking is for English and one other language, so book one session per language. Both sessions can use the same link.

04Is the session recorded?

Sessions are not recorded unless you ask. Connections are encrypted, and an NDA applies to every session.

05How many hours should we book for a consultation?

The rate is per hour, and the total shows before you pay. Book a little more than you plan, because everything is interpreted in both directions and unused time is not refunded.

06Which languages are easiest to schedule by video?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Russian and Korean are the easiest to schedule. Languages with few interpreters, such as Burmese or Pashto, need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Allemand sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
