Appointments we interpret

Video interpreters for social services appointments, from benefit interviews to case planning

Caseworkers and eligibility workers book these appointments by video. The notes you add to the booking, such as the type of case, reach the interpreter before the call.

Benefit eligibility interviews

The caseworker goes through the application questions with the applicant, one at a time. The interpreter interprets each question and answer, so the answers on the form are the applicant's own.

Recertification

A recertification interview confirms that a person or household still qualifies for benefits, so the questions are often about changes since the last interview. A list of the household members' names in the notes helps the interpreter prepare.

Case planning meetings

A caseworker and a client agree on goals and next steps, sometimes with a family member present. The interpreter interprets the whole meeting, including the client's questions about the plan.

Video appointments

What to know about social services appointments by video with an interpreter

When video is used

Social services appointments are held by video when the caseworker and the applicant are in different places. You can use your agency's meeting link, or we create one and add it to the project. Video is also chosen when no interpreter for the language works nearby, since our interpreters join from anywhere in the US. Agencies that receive federal funds must provide language help to applicants who need it.

Who takes part

The caseworker or eligibility worker runs the appointment, asks the questions on the application and asks for the documents the agency needs. The applicant, or the client in a case planning meeting, answers for themselves, and a family member sometimes joins. The interpreter joins the same call as a guest and interprets for both.

The interpreter's role

The goal is an appointment that goes as it would if both sides spoke the same language. Each question is interpreted in full for the applicant, and each answer in full for the caseworker, in the first person. The interpreter takes no side. What is said on the call stays confidential, and the interpreter gives no advice, explains no agency rules and suggests no answers.

Forms and proof

An eligibility interview follows an application form, and the worker may ask about documents that prove income or residence. Put the name of the form and a list of those documents in the booking notes, so the terms are familiar before the call. The names of the people on the case can go in the same notes.

FAQ

Questions about video interpreters for social services appointments

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Which platforms can the interpreter join?

Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and the Texliff room. If your agency's platform does not allow guests, we create a Texliff room link, which opens in the browser without installing anything.

02What if the applicant has no video?

Book a phone interpreter for that appointment. The confirmation includes a dial-in number and an access code, and the applicant can call from any phone.

03Can we ask for the same interpreter for every appointment in a case?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

04How is a video appointment priced?

You pay for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Each question and answer is said twice, so an interview takes longer than in English, and unused time is not refunded.

05Can one interpreter work with a family that speaks two languages?

No. One booking covers English and one other language. A meeting with two other languages needs two bookings, one per language, which can share the same link.

06Which languages do you interpret for social services?

70 languages. Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Russian are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages, such as Burmese or Pashto, need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Hindi sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
