Meetings we interpret
A school team holds several kinds of IEP meetings during a child's time in special education, and each one is booked the same way. Tell us the kind in the notes, so the interpreter knows what the team will go over.
The team meets to write a child's first IEP. Many parents hear these terms for the first time, so send the evaluation report ahead if the school can.
Every year the team reviews the child's progress, updates the goals and renews the services. The parent says how the child is doing at home, and the interpreter interprets both directions.
The team goes over the results of a new evaluation and decides whether the plan still fits. Reports like these use words with no everyday translation, so add the report to the booking notes.
A team can meet during the year to change one part of the plan, such as a service or a goal. Meetings like this often deal with a single change, so book the time the school sets aside.
Video IEP meetings
IEP meetings are usually held at the school, with the team around one table. They are held by video when the people involved are in different places, or when no interpreter for the parent's language works near the school. The school sets the time and invites the parent. The interpreter joins the same video call as a guest, so the parent hears the team in their own language.
The parent or guardian takes part as a member of the team and says what they see in their child. The special education teacher and the general education teacher describe how the child does in class, and a district representative speaks for the school district. The school psychologist or another evaluator explains test results, and the student may join. The interpreter joins to interpret for the parent in both directions.
The interpreter lets the parent follow the meeting at the same pace as the staff. A speaker says a few sentences and pauses, and the interpreter then says that part in the other language, in full, so goals, test scores and services reach the parent without being shortened. The interpreter is neutral, keeps what they hear confidential, and does not advise the parent or explain the school's decisions.
