Exam locations

On-site interpreters for independent medical examinations at examiners' offices and clinics

Put the address from the exam notice in the booking. The examiner decides where the exam is held, and these are the places our interpreters go.

Examiners' offices and clinics

Many examiners see claimants in their own office or in a clinic, where an exam room is set up for the physical part. Tell us the suite, the examiner's name and the check-in step when you book.

Buildings with a front desk

Some medical buildings ask visitors to sign in at a desk. You get the interpreter's name before the day, so you can send it ahead to the office or the building.

Away from large cities

Examiners work in smaller cities too. We send interpreters in all 50 states, and outside large metro areas an interpreter still comes, with more notice.

In-person exams

What to know about in-person independent medical examinations with an interpreter

When the interpreter comes in person

Most independent medical examinations are done in person, because the doctor has to examine the claimant. The interpreter reports to the address in your booking and stays through the history interview and the physical exam for the hours you booked. The booking is in the name of whoever places the order, such as the insurer, the defense firm or the examiner's office.

Who takes part

In the exam room are the examining doctor, who asks about the injury and carries out the exam, and the claimant, who answers and follows the doctor's instructions. The insurer or the defense side chooses the doctor. Where the rules allow it, the claimant's attorney or another observer is present too. The interpreter sits next to the claimant.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter lets the doctor and the claimant speak to each other as if there were one language in the room. The history questions and the exam instructions, such as asking the claimant to stand or bend, go into the claimant's language. What the claimant says, including how pain is described, goes to the doctor in English, in the claimant's own words. The interpreter takes no side between the insurer and the claimant, keeps what they hear confidential, and gives no opinion on the exam.

Before the day

Details for the exam

Put the claim number, the examiner's name and the injury or condition in the booking notes. The interpreter reads them before the day, so medical terms and names are familiar, and works for neither side during the history and the exam.

Presencial, por video o por teléfono

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for an independent medical examination

A physical exam is done with the claimant in front of the doctor, so in person is the usual choice. Video or phone can work for parts of the process.

Preguntas frecuentes

Questions about on-site interpreters for independent medical examinations

Las preguntas que escuchamos con más frecuencia, respondidas por nuestros equipos de despacho y gestión de proyectos.

¿No encuentra lo que busca?

01Who is allowed in the exam room?

The examiner's office sets that, so ask when the exam is scheduled. The interpreter attends for the claimant, and you can list the other attendees in the booking notes.

02Can a relative of the claimant interpret instead?

A relative is not neutral, and a child should never be asked to interpret. An interpreter lets the examiner hear the history exactly as the claimant gives it.

03What if the exam is rescheduled?

Cancellation is in writing. A full refund applies more than seven days before the exam, 75% between seven days and 48 hours before, and none after that point.

04How is an on-site exam priced?

By the hour, for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Unused time is not refunded, because the interpreter is reserved for the whole booking.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can we book an interpreter in?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian, Haitian Creole and Tagalog are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages, and exams far from a large city, need more notice.
