Exams in person

On-site interpreters for disability evaluations, from physical exams to functional capacity tests

A disability claim can involve more than one kind of exam. Each card says what the interpreter does in that exam.

Physical exams

The examiner checks movement, strength and reflexes, and asks where the claimant has pain. The interpreter interprets each instruction and each answer, and does not demonstrate the movements or comment on what the examiner finds.

Functional capacity tests

A functional capacity evaluation measures what the claimant can lift, carry, bend and walk, with the examiner giving instructions throughout. Book the whole length of time the clinic sets for the test.

Mental status exams

The examiner asks short questions about mood, memory and thinking, and may give simple tasks. The interpreter interprets the questions and the answers as they are given, and does not help the claimant to answer.

Disability exams

What to know about in-person disability exams with an interpreter

When the interpreter comes in person

Most disability exams are held in person, because the examiner needs to see the claimant move and respond. The interpreter reports to the clinic where the exam is scheduled and stays with the claimant. An appointment can include an interview, a physical exam and tests, and the interpreter follows the claimant from one part to the next. The clinic staff check the claimant in. Our dispatcher looks for interpreters closest to the clinic first.

Who takes part

The examiner, who may be a doctor, a psychologist or a therapist, interviews the claimant, carries out the exam and records what is found. The claimant answers questions about the condition and takes part in the tests. Clinic staff check the claimant in and bring them to the room. The interpreter stays next to the claimant through each part.

The interpreter's role

The examiner and the claimant need to understand each other fully, and the interpreter makes that possible in both languages. Instructions such as lift, bend or walk are interpreted word for word, and the claimant's answers about pain and limits are interpreted in the first person, with nothing added or left out. The interpreter does not demonstrate movements, help with a task or comment on the results. The interpreter is neutral and keeps the exam confidential.

Claim details in the notes

Add the claim reference, the examiner's name and the kind of exam to the booking notes, with the conditions the claimant will be asked about. The interpreter reads them before the day, so the names of conditions, medicines and treatments are familiar in the exam room.

Choosing between on-site, video and phone for a disability exam

Exams with a physical part need the interpreter in the room. Video and phone suit the interview parts.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for disability exams

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Can the interpreter stay for the functional capacity test?

Yes. The interpreter stays with the claimant through the test and interprets the examiner's instructions. Tell the clinic that an interpreter will be present.

02Can the same interpreter come to a second exam?

You can ask for it in the booking notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

03What if the claimant misses the exam or it is moved?

Cancellation is in writing. Cancelling more than seven days ahead returns the full price, cancelling between seven days and 48 hours ahead returns 75%, and later than that returns nothing.

04How is an in-person exam priced?

Each booked hour has a set price, and the total appears before you pay. Book the time the clinic has scheduled for the whole appointment, since the interpreter is reserved for all of it.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can I book for a disability exam?

70 languages. Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Russian and Korean are the easiest to schedule near most clinics. Rare languages need more notice, and so does a clinic far from a large city.

07Vos interprètes en Bosniaque sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
