The language

Obtenir Arabe right

Parts of an evaluation

On-site interpreters for special education evaluations, from the parent interview to the eligibility meeting

An evaluation done in person has parts that differ a lot from one another, and the interpreter works differently in each. Tell us in the notes which part you are booking.

Parent interview

The evaluator and the parent sit down to talk about the child's history. The interpreter sits next to the parent, and the conversation can run long, so plan breaks into the booked time.

Testing sessions

When the evaluator works with the child and needs an interpreter, the interpreter interprets only the instructions and the answers the evaluator directs, word for word. The evaluator decides how the test is given in the other language.

Eligibility meeting

The team meets with the parent to explain the results and to say whether the child qualifies for special education services. The interpreter interprets the whole discussion, including the parent's questions and concerns.

In-person evaluations

What to know about in-person evaluations with an interpreter

Parts held at the school

An evaluation has parts that happen in the school building. There is the parent interview, the observation and testing with the child, and the eligibility meeting around a table. When the parent or the child needs an interpreter in the room, the interpreter comes to the school, and the evaluator decides which parts need one. If the language has no interpreter near the school, a trip beyond the interpreter's metro area is quoted as a separate line when you book.

Who takes part

The school psychologist or another evaluator runs each part and decides how the work is done. A speech-language pathologist joins when speech and language are being assessed. The parent gives the history and hears the results, and the child takes part in the testing. The interpreter sits with the person who speaks another language.

The interpreter's role

During testing, the interpreter interprets only what the evaluator directs, which means the instructions and the child's answers, word for word. The interpreter does not help or prompt the child. In the parent interview and the eligibility meeting, the interpreter interprets everything in full, keeps it confidential and takes no side.

Booking each part

The parent interview, a testing session and the eligibility meeting may happen on different days, so book each one as its own session and say in the notes which part it is. Ask for the same interpreter for the interview and the results meeting when you can, and we assign them when they are available. The parent then hears a familiar voice at both.

An interpreter in the room is the choice when the evaluator works with the child in person. Conversations with the parent can use video or phone.

FAQ

Questions about on-site interpreters for special education evaluations

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Can the same interpreter work with the parent and with the child?

Name the interpreter in the booking notes. We book the service rather than a particular person, so we take the request into account and assign them when they are available.

02What should the interpreter read before the day?

Add the parent history form, the consent page and, for the eligibility meeting, the evaluation report to the booking notes. The interpreter reads them first, so the vocabulary is ready.

03How is an on-site evaluation session priced?

You pay by the hour for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Interviews run long when every question is said twice, and unused time is not refunded, so book enough time.

04What if the parent cannot attend at the booked time?

Cancellation is in writing. The refund is full more than seven days before the session, 75% from seven days down to 48 hours before, and none after that.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours ahead, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages can we book for evaluations?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese and Korean are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Arabe sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
