The language

Obtenir Arabe right

Typical Arabe bookings

When phone works

Phone interpreters for social services appointments, from eligibility interviews to check-ins

Part of casework is done by telephone. Caseworkers book a phone interpreter for the situations below.

Eligibility interviews by phone

The caseworker asks the application questions over the phone, and the interpreter is on the same call for the applicant. Add the program and the names of the household members to the booking notes.

Follow-up calls

A caseworker calls to ask for a missing document, to clear up an answer or to explain the next step. Book the time you expect the call to take, with a little margin.

Case check-ins

Caseworkers call clients on an open case to ask how things are going and whether anything has changed. A client without video can still join from any phone.

Phone appointments

What to know about social services appointments by phone with an interpreter

When phone is used

A phone appointment is held when the caseworker and the applicant do not need to see each other or look at a document together. The usual phone appointment is a run of questions and answers, such as an eligibility interview or a follow-up call. Phone is also chosen when no interpreter for the language works nearby, since interpreters dial in from anywhere. An appointment that needs a form on screen is better held by video.

Who is on the line

The caseworker or eligibility worker leads the call and asks the questions on the application. The applicant answers from their own phone, and a family member sometimes joins. The interpreter dials in as well and stays on the line for the whole call, so each side hears the other in their own language.

The interpreter's role

Without video, a phone call depends on turns. Each speaker finishes a part and pauses, and the interpreter then interprets that part in full for the other person. The interpreter is neutral. Anything heard on the call stays private, and the interpreter does not advise the applicant or say what a rule means.

Before the call

Your confirmation holds a dial-in number and an access code, so share both with the applicant before the call. The caseworker cannot see paper documents, so ask the applicant to keep the ones the caseworker will ask about within reach. If the call turns out to need video, we can change the booking, subject to the interpreter's availability.

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for social services appointments

Phone works when the appointment is questions and answers. Choose video or on-site when people need to look at something together or meet at one address.

Si vous avez aussi besoin de traductions

If you also need documents translated before the call

A caseworker on the phone cannot look at the applicant's papers, so documents in another language are best translated and sent before the call.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for social services appointments

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Does the applicant need an app or a smartphone?

No. Everyone dials in from any phone, using the number and the access code in the confirmation.

02Can someone join the call after it starts?

Yes. Once everyone is on the line, the interpreter can add a third party to the call, such as a family member.

03Is the call recorded?

We do not record calls unless you ask. Every call is covered by an NDA, and connections are encrypted.

04How is a phone appointment priced?

You pay for the time you book, with the total shown before you pay. The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking, so unused time is not refunded.

05Which languages do you interpret by phone?

70 languages, into and out of English. Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Haitian Creole and Vietnamese are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

06Vos interprètes en Arabe sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
