Cases we cover

Video interpreters for depositions in injury, workers' compensation, employment and insurance cases

Most of the remote depositions we interpret come from these four kinds of cases. We match the interpreter to the case, and the notes you add to the booking reach the interpreter before the deposition.

Personal injury cases

We interpret plaintiff and eyewitness depositions in car accident, slip-and-fall and premises liability cases. Questions about injuries and treatment come up often, so a list of the medical providers in the file helps the interpreter prepare.

Workers' compensation cases

Defense firms and insurers often take claimant depositions by video, because the claimant lives far from the firm. The questions usually cover the job, the accident and the medical treatment.

Employment cases

We interpret depositions of current and former employees in wage, discrimination and wrongful termination cases. Job titles, shift schedules and pay terms come up often, and a short list of names from the complaint helps.

Insurance examinations under oath

Insurers request examinations under oath in property and auto claims. A court reporter records the testimony on the video call, and the interpreter is sworn in the same way as at a deposition.

Dépositions à distance

What to know about remote depositions with an interpreter

When video is used

Depositions are usually taken in person, in a conference room at a law office or a court reporting office. They are taken by video when meeting in one room is not practical, for example, when the witness lives far from where the case is handled, cannot travel or speaks a language with no interpreter nearby. The attorneys agree to take the deposition remotely, or the court orders it. Everyone then joins the same video call from their own location.

Who takes part

The people on the call are the same as in a conference room. The witness answers questions under oath, and the attorneys for the parties ask questions and make objections. A court reporter swears in the witness and writes down everything said on the record. When the witness speaks another language, an interpreter joins the call, and the court reporter swears in the interpreter as well.

The interpreter's role

The interpreter's place is between the attorneys and the witness, and their job is to make the communication as clear as it would be if everyone spoke the same language. Every question is interpreted into the witness's language and every answer into English, so the transcript holds the witness's full testimony. The interpreter is neutral. They work for neither side, and they do not explain questions or add anything to the answers.

With an exhibit

Exhibit shownQuestionInterpretedAnswerInterpreted

Exhibits on screen

Counsel shares exhibits on screen during a remote deposition, and the witness is asked about each one. Exhibits in the witness's language can be translated beforehand as certified translations from the same account, so everyone reads the same English version while the interpreter works.

Sur place, par vidéo ou par téléphone

Choosing between video and on-site for a deposition

Video is the usual choice when the participants are in different places. On-site works better in the cases below.

  • Sur place

Book an interpreter in the room when the witness sits with the court reporter, is new to video calls or has trouble hearing on a call.

  • Vidéo (VRI)

Video fits when the witness, counsel and the court reporter join from different places and the exhibits can be shared on screen.

  • Téléphone (OPI)

Depositions are interpreted on-site or by video.

FAQ

Questions about video interpreters for depositions

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Can the interpreter join the court reporter's platform?

Yes. Add the link the court reporter or the noticing firm sent, and the interpreter joins it as a guest. If you do not have a link, we create one in the Texliff room and add it to your project.

02Can the same interpreter come back if the deposition continues another day?

You can ask for it. Book the next day as a new session and name the interpreter in the notes. A booking is for the service, not for a particular interpreter, so we assign them when they are available.

03Can one interpreter cover two witnesses who speak different languages?

No. Each language needs its own interpreter, so book one session for each language with the same deposition link.

04How is a remote deposition priced?

By the hour, for the hours you book, and the total shows before you pay. Book more time than an English-only deposition would take, because every question and answer is said twice.

05How far ahead should we book?

At least 48 to 72 hours before the deposition, and earlier if you can.

06Which languages do you cover for depositions?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian, Korean and Arabic are the easiest to schedule. Rare languages need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Croate sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
