When phone works

Phone interpreters for negotiation calls on open points between rounds

Phone suits the small steps between rounds, not the rounds themselves. The three situations below are where a phone interpreter is booked for a negotiation.

One open point

After a round, a single point may remain open, such as a payment term or a delivery date. A short call can settle it without another full session.

Confirming a revised draft

A team that has received a revised draft calls the other side to confirm what a changed clause says. Both sides read the same text while they talk, and the interpreter passes on each statement about it.

Arranging the next round

The date, the place and the people who will attend the next round can be settled by phone. Book the time for the call, and note the dates you want to propose.

Negotiation calls

What to know about negotiation calls by phone with an interpreter

When phone is used

A negotiation call is held by phone when it is short, the wording is already in everyone's hands and the point at issue is narrow. Nobody needs to see anything on the call itself. A new draft, a long list of changes or a group of people who need to see each other calls for video or an in-person round instead.

Who is on the line

Each side joins through its lead negotiator, who speaks for the company and answers in the language of that side. An attorney may join to check the wording of the clause being discussed. Everyone calls the same number from any phone, with no app or link, and the interpreter dials in too.

The interpreter's role

Each person speaks and then pauses, so the interpreter can interpret that part before the next one starts. Prices, dates and conditions are passed on exactly, and every reply is interpreted as completely as the offer before it. The interpreter stays neutral between the companies, keeps the call confidential, and gives no opinions or advice.

One open point at a time

A call works best on one or two open points. Email the clause and the wording you propose to both sides before the call, and name the points in the booking notes so the interpreter has the figures that will come up.

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for a contract negotiation

Phone is for the small steps between rounds. A round with several people, or one that works through the draft clause by clause, needs video or a room.

Perguntas frequentes

Questions about phone interpreters for contract negotiations

Aquelas que ouvimos com mais frequência, respondidas pelas nossas equipas de expedição e gestão de projetos.

Não encontrou o que procura?

01Can we add our attorney to the call?

Yes. Once everyone is on the line, the interpreter can add a third party to the call, such as your attorney.

02What if the call turns out to need the draft on screen?

Ask us to move the booking to a video session. We can do it when the interpreter is available then, and the draft goes on screen.

03How is a negotiation call priced?

The rate is by the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. Book a little longer than you expect, because each statement is interpreted and the call should not end while a point is still open.

04Do we book each call separately?

Yes. Each call is booked on its own, with its own price and its own confirmation.

05Can the call be recorded so both sides keep the agreed wording?

Sessions are not recorded unless you ask for it. Tell us when you book if you want this call recorded.

06Which languages are easiest to get by phone?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Arabic are the easiest to schedule by phone, and rare languages need more notice.

07Seus intérpretes de Alemão são certificados?

Sim.
