Calls we interpret

Phone interpreters for attorney-client calls, from intake to case updates and document requests

A call is enough when nobody has to see a document or a face. Attorneys book a phone interpreter for the three calls below, and the notes differ for each.

First calls with new clients

The attorney asks what happened and what the client needs, and the interpreter interprets the whole answer. Put the practice area and any names in the notes, so the interpreter knows the subject.

Case status updates

Attorneys call to say that a hearing is set, a settlement proposal has arrived or a filing is done. The interpreter interprets the news and the client's questions in full, so the client does not get a partial answer.

Scheduling and document requests

A short call can set the next meeting or ask the client to bring or send a paper. The interpreter interprets the request and the answer, so the date and the list of papers are clear to both sides.

Client phone calls

What to know about client phone calls with an interpreter

When phone is used

A phone call is used when the conversation does not need a document or a face to be seen. It is also used when the client has no video, or when no interpreter for the client's language works nearby, because our interpreters dial in from anywhere. The attorney books a time, and everyone dials in at that time. If the call turns out to need a document on screen, we can change the booking to video, subject to the interpreter's availability.

Who is on the line

The attorney and the client dial in to the number in the confirmation. A paralegal sometimes dials in as well, to note dates and papers the client has to bring. The interpreter dials in too, and the attorney and the client talk to each other as they would on any other call.

The interpreter's role

Without video, the interpreter relies on pauses to keep the call orderly. The attorney says a part and stops, the interpreter says it in the client's language, and then the client answers and stops. Both sides are interpreted in full. The interpreter keeps what they hear confidential and does not tell the client what to do.

Dates and numbers

On a call, dates, amounts and addresses are easy to mishear. Say them slowly, and send them to the client in writing afterward. The interpreter interprets each number as it is spoken, and the client can ask for it to be repeated. Ask the client to say key dates back once, so both sides know they were heard correctly.

Sur place, par vidéo ou par téléphone

Choosing between phone, video and on-site for a client call

Phone is enough when nothing has to be shown. Video or an interpreter in the room is better in the cases below.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for client calls

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01Does my client need an app or a link?

No. The client dials the number in your confirmation from any phone and enters the access code.

02Can a third person join the call?

Yes. Once everyone is on the line, the interpreter can add a third party, such as a paralegal or another attorney, to the call.

03What if the client does not answer or joins late?

The interpreter is reserved for the whole booking, so time spent waiting for the client comes out of the hours you booked, and unused time is not refunded. Confirm the call time with the client before you book.

04How is a client call priced?

By the time you book, and the total shows before you pay. Clients tend to have questions, so book more time than the attorney's part alone needs.

05Is the conversation private?

Every session is covered by an NDA and connections are encrypted. Nothing is recorded unless you ask.

06Which client languages can you interpret by phone?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic and Haitian Creole are the easiest to schedule. Burmese and Pashto, for example, need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Hindi sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
