Hearings held by phone

Phone interpreters for administrative hearings held by telephone and the calls to prepare

Unemployment and other agency hearings are often held by telephone, and the notice of hearing gives the call-in details. People book a phone interpreter in the situations below.

Unemployment appeal hearings

The hearing officer runs the appeal on a conference line. The interpreter dials in to the same line and interprets for whoever speaks another language, whether the claimant or the employer.

Other agency hearings

Licensing, housing and other agency hearings can be held by telephone as well. Check the notice of hearing, and tell us the agency and the kind of hearing when you book.

Preparing with your representative

Before the hearing, a claimant goes over the case with a representative or an attorney. Book a separate call for it, on the dial-in number from your confirmation, so the interpreter is on the line for the whole conversation.

Telephone hearings

What to know about agency hearings by telephone with an interpreter

When phone is used

Unemployment and other agency hearings are often held by telephone. Everyone dials in at the set time to the number on the notice of hearing, from any phone and with no app or link. Nobody has to travel to a hearing office. If no interpreter for the language lives nearby, the interpreter can still dial in from anywhere in the US.

Who is on the line

The hearing officer or administrative law judge, the claimant, the representative and a person for the agency or the employer all dial in to the same line. The hearing officer asks questions and decides the case, and the claimant answers. The representative speaks for the claimant, and the agency or the employer presents the other side. The interpreter dials in as well and interprets for the person who speaks another language.

The interpreter's role

The hearing officer and the claimant cannot see each other, so the interpreter takes one speaker at a time. Each speaker pauses, and the interpreter interprets that part in full, in both directions, with answers in the first person. The interpreter takes no side, keeps the hearing confidential, and never tells the claimant what to say.

Before the call

On a phone hearing nobody can hold up a paper, so follow the notice for how documents reach the agency before the call. Send the same documents to the interpreter in the booking notes, with the claim number and the names of the people on the line.

FAQ

Questions about phone interpreters for agency hearings

Celles que nous entendons le plus souvent, auxquelles répondent nos équipes de répartition et de gestion de projet.

Vous ne trouvez pas la réponse ?

01What if the agency moves the hearing to a video link?

If the agency moves the hearing to video, tell us and we can switch the booking to a video session, subject to the interpreter's availability. Add the agency's link to your dashboard once you have it.

02How does the interpreter get on the agency's line?

The interpreter dials the agency's number from your booking, so add the call-in number and access code as soon as the notice arrives.

03Can my representative join the preparation call?

Yes. Share the dial-in number and the access code from your confirmation with your representative, and they dial in like everyone else.

04Is the hearing recorded?

Texliff does not record sessions unless you ask. Whether the agency records the hearing is up to the agency.

05How is a phone hearing priced?

The time you book sets the price, and the total shows before you pay. Unused time is not refunded, so book the time the notice gives for the call.

06Which languages do you interpret by phone for agency hearings?

70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian and Haitian Creole are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.

07Vos interprètes en Chinois sont-ils certifiés ?

Oui.
