Interpreters at a law firm
A law firm needs an interpreter whenever a client or a witness cannot follow legal advice or testimony in English. The need covers meetings with your own clients, depositions of witnesses who speak another language, and mediations where a party has to understand every offer. By video, the interpreter does not have to be near your office, which makes less common languages easier to cover.
In a client meeting, the attorney speaks to the client and the interpreter interprets in both directions. In a deposition, a court reporter also takes part, swears in the witness and the interpreter, and writes down the testimony. In a mediation, the interpreter stays with your client in the joint session and in the private sessions with the mediator.
The interpreter's job is to make the communication between attorney and client as clear as it would be in one language, so advice is understood the way it was given. Everything is interpreted in full, without summaries. The interpreter keeps what they hear confidential and does not give advice or opinions.
Before the session
Add the case caption, the names of the people involved and the legal terms that will come up to the booking notes. The interpreter reads them before the session, and every booking for the case stays together in your dashboard.
