Kinds of hearings
An agency hearing is run by a hearing officer or an administrative law judge, not by a court. People book an interpreter most often for the hearings below when the agency holds them by video.
A claimant or an employer appeals a decision about benefits. The interpreter interprets for the person who speaks another language, and the notice of hearing tells you whether the hearing is held by video.
A claimant appears before an administrative law judge to explain how a condition limits their work. Medical terms come up, so send the names of the conditions and the providers in the booking notes.
A license holder or an applicant appeals a decision of a licensing board or the motor vehicle department. Give us the agency and the license type, so the interpreter knows the terms.
A parent or student responds to a discipline decision at a school hearing, and a tenant responds to a housing authority decision. Tell us the district or the authority when you book.
Agency hearings
Many agencies hold hearings by video, and the notice of hearing says how to join. The claimant, the representative and the hearing officer each join the link from their own location, and the claimant can join from home or an office. Video also reaches languages that few interpreters near the agency speak, since our interpreters join from anywhere in the US.
The hearing officer or administrative law judge conducts the hearing and rules on the case. The claimant or applicant explains their side and answers questions. A representative or an attorney may speak for them, and a representative of the agency or the employer presents the other side. An interpreter joins the same call for whoever speaks another language.
The interpreter lets the claimant follow the hearing and speak in their own language as fully as an English speaker would. Questions, statements and testimony from all sides are interpreted in full, and the claimant's answers are interpreted into English in the first person. The interpreter works for neither side, keeps the hearing confidential, and does not explain the decision or advise the claimant.
On the day
The notice of hearing says how to join. Add the agency's link to the booking as soon as you have it, and the interpreter joins as a guest at the booked time. If you want to prepare with your representative first, a Texliff room link works for that call.

Agencies set their own rules, so check the notice of hearing. We assign a court-certified interpreter to every hearing we book.
Cancellation is in writing. You get a full refund more than seven days before the hearing, 75% between seven days and 48 hours before, and no refund at 48 hours or less.
You see the total for the hours you book before you pay. Unused time is not refunded, so book the time the notice gives for the hearing.
70 languages. Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Haitian Creole and Russian are the easiest to schedule, and rare languages need more notice.
