What to know

What to know about a Dutch divorce certificate translation

Where Dutch divorce records come from

Dutch divorce records reach us from the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. In the Netherlands the divorce is entered in the civil registry, and the municipal Dienst van de burgerlijke stand issues an Uittreksel uit de huwelijksakte that shows it, on white paper with the registrar's seal. Belgian town halls issue an uittreksel through the burgerlijke stand. Aruba's DBSB and Curaçao's Kranshi issue extracts, and Curaçao copies printed since April 3, 2023 use security paper. Sint Maarten works from the court order. We translate the extract or decree in your hands, complete, with the back.

Where the translation is accepted

Texliff's certified Dutch translations are accepted by USCIS, the National Visa Center, state agencies, DMVs, schools and universities, courts and more. When a petitioner has a prior marriage, USCIS reads the date the divorce was registered and matches both spouses' names to the earlier marriage record. County clerks and courts check that the decree or extract names the issuing registry and carries its seal. DMVs look at the surname after the divorce. Each of them files the signed statement of accuracy with the translation.

What the translator checks on a Dutch divorce extract

Names are copied as the register gives them, with the prefixes such as van, de and van der kept where the record keeps them. Day-first dates become full English dates, and the date of the divorce is told apart from the date of the marriage. Registry references and deed numbers are copied exactly. Round and square stamps, seals and the registrar's signature are described where they sit. On a Surinamese record the entries are handwritten on a printed form, and any line the translator cannot read is marked as unreadable.

FAQ

Dutch divorce certificate questions, answered.

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Is a Dutch divorce certificate translation accepted by USCIS?

Yes. Every certified translation includes a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy meeting USCIS requirements, and the same format is accepted by courts, universities, and licensing boards.

02How are Dutch names spelled in the English translation?

Dutch extracts distinguish given names from the surname prefix chain; the translation follows the register exactly. Dutch uses the Latin alphabet; surname prefixes like van, van der, and de are part of the legal name and are preserved with their exact capitalization.

03How are dates converted?

Dates are day-first and are converted to unambiguous English dates.

04How much does a Dutch divorce certificate translation cost?

Pricing is by word count, not by page — a short document costs less than a dense one, and you see the exact total before paying. Certified translation starts at $24.95.
