What to know

What to know about a Swedish divorce certificate translation

Where Swedish divorce papers come from

In Sweden a divorce is documented by the district court (tingsrätt). It issues the Skilsmässoprotokoll on white A4 paper, stamped with the court's name and place and signed by the archive officer, and certified copies can be requested from the court. Civil status also shows on the Personbevis, the extract from the Skatteverket population register. In Finland the Digital and Population Data Services Agency issues a civil status certificate, and records from before September 30, 1999 may sit with the parish office (kirkkoherranvirasto). U.S. offices usually want the court document that shows the divorce is final. We translate the version you were issued, complete, front and back where the back carries anything.

Where the translation is accepted

Texliff's certified Swedish translations are accepted by USCIS, the National Visa Center, state agencies, DMVs, schools and universities, courts and more. For a Swedish divorce, officers look for the date the divorce took effect and for both spouses' names to match the marriage record and the passports. Court stamps, the archive officer's signature and case numbers are translated where they sit. Dates run year first, so 2019-03-08 becomes March 8, 2019 and cannot be read as August 3. The signed statement of accuracy is filed with the translation.

Send the protocol, receive a certified PDF

Photograph or scan every page of the protocol or certificate, front and back, and upload it. We count the words and the price shows before you order. A native Swedish translator who handles court and civil records does the translation. A second linguist then checks the names, dates and case numbers. Your dashboard shows each stage. The signed PDF comes with a Certificate of Accuracy, a mailed hard copy is available on request, and rush options are available.

What the translator checks on a Swedish divorce record

Each spouse's name is spelled as the passport spells it, with å, ä and ö kept. The personnummer and the case number (målnummer) are copied digit for digit. The date of the ruling and the date it became final are kept apart, because they often differ. The court's name, the place stamp and the archive officer's signature are described where they sit. Terms on custody, support and the division of property are translated in full, and any handwritten note in a margin is translated as well.

FAQ

Swedish divorce certificate questions, answered.

The ones we hear most often, answered by our dispatch and project-management teams.

Can't find it here?

01Is a Swedish divorce certificate translation accepted by USCIS?

Yes. Every certified translation includes a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy meeting USCIS requirements, and the same format is accepted by courts, universities, and licensing boards.

02How are Swedish names spelled in the English translation?

Swedish extracts reference the personal identity number (personnummer); identifiers transfer exactly as printed. Swedish uses the Latin alphabet with å, ä, and ö — preserved in names exactly as issued.

03How are dates converted?

Swedish dates run year-first (1990-05-12) and are converted to standard Western dates.

04How much does a Swedish divorce certificate translation cost?

Pricing is by word count, not by page — a short document costs less than a dense one, and you see the exact total before paying. Certified translation starts at $24.95.
