What to know

What to know about a Nepali divorce certificate translation

Where Nepali divorce records come from

Most Nepali divorce records we translate were issued in Nepal, with some from Bhutan. In Nepal a divorce is registered at the ward office or municipality, and since 2015 the registration can be filed online, with a token number used to collect the certificate. Certificates issued since March 2013 usually have Nepali in the top half and English in the bottom half. In Bhutan the court gives both spouses a copy of its judgment, and where no court case took place a village headman can issue a certificate of divorce. We translate the version you were issued, complete, front and back.

Where the translation is accepted

Texliff's certified Nepali translations are accepted by USCIS, the National Visa Center, state agencies, DMVs, schools and universities, courts and more. For a prior marriage, USCIS officers look for the date the divorce was registered or the judgment became final, and they match both spouses' names against the petition and the passport. State agencies and courts read the registration number and the issuing ward or court. The translation states each date in plain English. The signed statement of accuracy is what each office files with it.

What we check on a Nepali divorce certificate

Each spouse's name is spelled the way the passport spells it, with the father's and grandfather's names kept where the certificate lists them. Dates in the Bikram Sambat calendar run about 56 to 57 years ahead of the Gregorian year, so the translation converts every one and states it clearly. Ward and municipality identifiers, registration numbers and token numbers are copied exactly. Where a certificate has Nepali above and English below, the translator reads both halves and flags any difference. Seals and handwritten entries are described where they sit.
